I can't hear you. Can you hear me?
Your mute button should be great.
Yeah, should be great. Got it.
So Andrew, I'm gonna give you up high.
Oh you're in your office huh.
Um, so I'm gonna give you guys a couple of tips before we begin Andrew. That Green broadcast video button. You see that up there?
So when tempers delivering the presentation, make that button grey so that people are not watching you the whole time.
And make sure you make grey. Don't hit that camera button.
Because it will leave a black box on the screen and nothing makes the PowerPoint look a little bit smaller. So you want your box to just go away and then Rebroadcast the video when you come in at the end, presumably to field to Kemper a couple of the more common questions and more broadly applicable questions that came up in chat.
So and then pepper, when your your Gray control slides button is green.
When you make that Green by toggling it, you will be in control of the slides.
So I'm just clicking on the slide the arrow, the arrow.
Yeah, the arrow button doesn't really work.
And Andrew, did you get my most recent email?
At the chat is gonna go wild for you.
It's gonna go wild so I'm.
Yeah I am I actually I told Dave about that and he volunteered to come in also.
So I sent him the email that we got from Jen gamble the other day with the link to this so if he.
I think that that I don't think it would be a bad thing basically to another person.
Does he already have slate access? His permissions probably are not set up to join this event.
Oh no probably not I forgot about that part of it.
Right, so so much tell me his is Dave Love, is that right?
That isn't that the name yeah dude you need as you be it.
Thank you I'm gonna email John Gamble and see if she can give him access right now.
OK, and then I'm gonna be in a background for the presentation, but you are not going to see me because I'm going to. I'm going to toggle my broadcast video button and then I will. You won't see me anymore, but I will be in the background and if anything if you need me for anything, I'll be here. I'll help with the chat as I can, but clearly I don't have the discipline specific expertise. I 01 other thing for Andrew and Bailey.
Jeff shared during his presentation a coronavirus response that I thought might be beneficial for you guys. Um, so questions will come up in the chat. Like cat, what's gonna happen if the our class is gonna be on line for fall 2019? Is the campus going to close things like that? And Jack's response was essentially I don't know what's going to happen. No one knows what's going to happen, but I'm confident that we can deliver that you be can deliver a world class education if we have to pivot how we're teaching and how our students are learning.
So just to give you like a bit of a response that I've seen used with some success.
'cause we're doing it right now.
So Shannon, your audio is a bit choppy, uhm?
I don't know if that's just for me or have.
I'm going to change browsers.
I'm gonna go and change browsers.
I can't hear you, but that's OK.
Yeah, I can hear you now.
Yes it is backwards it's very it's confusing for me too.
Yeah, it's mirrored. I I. I don't know how to undo that.
Oh, congratulations by the way.
Camper your video has been frozen for awhile.
I was like he's moving for me.
Oh it is maybe it's me then I don't know.
Have you done one of these yet?
Hey Andrew's back is a ladens coming right? Oh Oh, there's Shannon Alright.
The video or the yeah refresh the webpage, but under your video still frozen I can hear you, but you're frozen.
The Bailey said I'm moving, OK?
Maybe it's just me, I don't know.
Yeah, but um Baileys video is the only one that's actually moving.
Shannon, you you sound much better.
So camper with do you want me to keep my video on at the beginning? For when you introduce yourself and then you want me to introduce myself and then you know, just go to the background basically.
Yeah, yeah, that's fine and I'll do the same with late. And if he joins us.
And then I'll just be in the background. I'll shut myself off and then be in the background so.
So Andrew, I sent the request to get David Love, um, access to sleep. Does he know any? Does he know? Like how to get into the system? Does he know the login or where the events are or anything like that?
He said, he said at one point that he's used it, but all.
Uhm, OK and then camper. I'm gonna just reflect. Refresh your recollection so this I or maybe um you haven't heard yet from Robert and Matt, but this is being recorded and then will post these on line once the captioning cleaned up.

There's about, uh, the numbers are still climbing, so if you're joining, that's awesome. Um, somebody, somebody mentioned hoping we're safe and healthy. We are. We're all good. Let me start with introductions. My name is Kemper Louis. I am currently the chair of the mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department.
Paul Liotta
02:02:54 PM
Hey Jackson
Um, I've been at UB for almost 24 years. Uh, before that I was in North Carolina. I was in Georgia and I grew up mostly in Texas. But what I wanted to do, as we introduce ourselves, I'm going to ask my colleagues Andrew and latent appear something as well when I ask them to share either their favorite TV show, their favorite movie, or their favorite book. And so I'll start and I'll kind of give. I'll do all three. My favorite book is the Chronicles of Narnia series.

How’s it hanging Jackson
Hi everybody, like like doctor Lewis set my name is Andrew Fogelsanger. I'm the undergraduate coordinator for the Department I handle.
Scheduling the courses um enrollment management, some advising. Once you guys progressive a little bit further in the program, you can come to me right from the beginning and I help with classes and getting into the classes you need to fill your schedule and all that kind of thing. I was born and raised right in this area. I went to suburban high school, Lancaster High School so I was I was born and raised here. I can't imagine.
Really being anywhere else.

Hi!
So my favorite TV show is pretty easy. It's parks and rec. It seems to be what my wife and I watch. Whatever we turn the TV on. I do agree the office like like doctor Lewis said, it is right up there as well. Favorite movie for me might be too difficult to decide on one, so I'll stick with the favorite TV show is definitely parks and rec that that was an easy one.
So as long as Laytons Mike's on here will turn it over to him.
Yeah, then, Layton Collins is one of our students late now. Have you introduce yourself and tell him your favorite movie show or book?

I'm gonna go through some information with some slides. I'll get to the end of that in about 30 minutes or so, 2530 minutes, and then I'll start to answer some questions as well. So I'm going to dive in. You can kind of keep up with me and chat at the same time I know you're good multitaskers, so you see Bailey and Shannon have introduced themselves. They're going to be helping out with the chat as well. Alright, so life and mechanical and aerospace engineering here you be.

You know there's there's a lot of perceptions about mechanical and aerospace engineering, and I wanted to make sure some of your perceptions about what those fields are are accurate. I've chosen some of these graphic images just because they represent a lot of what we do in study in our Department, whether it's Sustainable Energy, Nano, Micro Devices, Robotics, manufacturing, space propulsion, automated vehicles, prosthetics.
Tanzim Elahi
02:07:12 PM
Is there a core curriculum that we have to follow. For example are there any foreign language requirements
Jasper Stedman
02:07:18 PM
Refreshing the page did nothing, but I closed the tab and went back to the link I was emailed. Now works
Jacob Belyea
02:07:21 PM
Hi
That that covers a lot of what we do. So while these images may not be exactly from the labs in our Department, but they represent the concepts that we that we study that we teach, and so this is really which comes should come to mind when we're talking about mechanical and Aerospace Engineering where you can get jobs. I'll start right off the bat is a lot of you are thinking where am I going to work? Where do students that you be actually get placed? We get it get placed in some.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:07:47 PM
Tanzim, yes you will have to complete UB Curriculum requirements (general education requirements) but a language is NOT required
Trevor Conte
02:07:52 PM
How will we be able to schedule classes now?
Some really some innovative non traditional sectors. Let me let me give you an example. I just did a search jobs at Apple which you wouldn't think necessarily. Mechanical Engineers sure go work at Apple, but there's over 600 jobs that are related to mechanical engineering. I just did this search 2 days ago so you can see a screen capture their over 600 results to work at Apple.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:08:26 PM
Trevor, incoming students are advised at the SEAS level. Advisors like Baylee are extremely helpful and they would assist with your first few semesters.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:08:28 PM
Trevor, as a freshman you will be contacted by our office in the summer to create your schedule. You will work with an advisor to register you for classes
Then I did a similar search for Google Mechanical Engineers at Google and there's over 100 jobs there currently for something to do with mechanical engineering. So a job in degree that's required in mechanical engineering background in mechanical engineering. I've shown you a couple right there. There's a product design engineer for the Google Nest product line. There's a camera hardware engineer that they needed some of their product line as well. So again over 100 jobs there.
Edwin Israel
02:08:30 PM
Will a recording of the webinar be available after the session ends?
And then I did a search for aerospace engineer at Amazon.
Trevor Conte
02:08:49 PM
Thx baylee!
Darnell Rice
02:09:03 PM
Hello, this is Cindy, I am standing in the gap as they say, for my husband who was called in to work. Our son Isaac will be attending in the Fall.
And you can see there are 67 jobs right now for aerospace engineers at Amazon because of their prime error operation, and we have really strong connections to to Amazon. I just met with one of the lead engineers from prime air just a couple weeks ago and I'll be meeting with him again in a couple weeks. They want to hire interns. They want to hire people from our program because we're the only space program in Sony were the only show in town.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:09:07 PM
Edwin, yes it will. You (and anyone) can find it here: http://engineering.buffalo.edu/home/prospective/webinars.html
Or when it comes to aerospace engineering, so our students are getting jobs in some very cool places. Let me let me show you just a few oven and what they're doing so Bradley cheat them on the left. There he got his bachelors in mechanical and Aero.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:09:30 PM
Hi Cindy, thank you for joining us.
Edwin Israel
02:09:31 PM
word tyyy
Which, by the way, it's fairly easy to do here. About 40% of our students get double degrees, mechanical and Aero because it's about four courses that are different. So if you come in with some AP credit, or if you take some summer classes or just take an overload on a couple of semesters, you can get 2 degrees in four years fairly easily. He found it while he was here. The student for exploration and development space, the said group, which has like over 100 students in it now.
He's now see 00 um and president at advanced based which if you haven't heard about it to start up in Colorado but it's not really a startup anymore 'cause it's doing a tremendous amount of work with NASA is tio at another startup blacksmith technologies so he's doing phenomenal that picture you see is him coming back to you be and talking with a lot of our students you see the Rockets those are the Rockets that our students are building Leslie whites.
On the right got her bachelors in mechanical engineering she's actually working at mitre Corporation in DC and what she's leading is actually the development of the next generation.
Darnell Rice
02:10:48 PM

Mr.lewis mentioned just 4 courses different between mechanical and aerospace UG degree , did i hear it right ? - how many credits is the difference ?
Trevor Conte
02:10:59 PM
So we’ll be able to change to a double major at the summer meeting with our counselor’s?
Flight control system for all of North America. So she's basically the lead on that team. Our flight control system, apparently from what she tells me, is very antiquated. It's patched, there's most of our FAA engineers don't actually know how it works because it's so old, and so the FAA in a number of organizations decided to reboot the entire North American flight control system, and she's the lead engineer on that.
I'm actually the rest of the world is watching what her team is doing is they may roll out the exact same system that she's helping design.
Bryson Leitch
02:11:10 PM
Conte I think so
Trevor Conte
02:11:38 PM
Hey what’s up Bryson
Baylee Snodgrass
02:11:42 PM
Viswesh yes, its actually a difference of about 5 classes so around ~20 credits to have the double major
To show you alicel Trinidad got her bachelors in mechanical engineering she was a swimmer when she was here she is now teaching in the city at CCNY but in between there she went to the FBI which was a very cool gig for her our students like I said go many different places she worked for the FBI for a few years and then decided to come back and do some more training in engineering and got her pH D and now she's a professor in the city.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:12:00 PM
Trevor, you'd be able to switch to a dual major as you progress through the program. Most students thinking of being dual begin as an AE student. But, that's not required
Phenomenal young man he got his Bachelor science in the aerospace engineering and I remember teaching him he would come into class with his Camera around his neck as photography was his hobby.
But then when he graduated he realized he really wanted to pursue his passion.
Trevor Conte
02:12:15 PM
Okay thx!
And so he started into the photography field and now he has won 2 Pulitzer prizes which if you're not familiar with that it's basically the equivalent to the Nobel Prize in science.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:12:20 PM
Trevor, yes you will be able to express your interest in the double major anytime you meet with an advisor and we'll guide you!'
Viswesh Seshan
02:12:30 PM
can i opt for the double major once i join?
And if you do the math you know he's if you look at his face you see how young he is he's in his mid thirties now he won those when he was the 3031 and there's his Instagram.
Bryson Leitch
02:12:40 PM
Mr. Conte how are doing?
Trevor Conte
02:12:46 PM
Not too bad
Jeffrey Hannam
02:12:55 PM
I will be working at a summer camp for a little over a month this summer, and after that I'll be at a different camp program for about a week. Will this cause a problem when I try to schedule my classes?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:12:57 PM
Viswesh, yes you can. Usually students will declare the double major after some time in the program
Bryson Leitch
02:12:59 PM
Good to hear
Address there if you want to connect with them and see what is doing but let me just show you some of the photos that he won Pulitzer Pulitzer prizes for so the Top one is the mud slides in Washington a few years ago that he was there for the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino he was at the Las Vegas fires last summer as well and then he flew here and spend some time with our students but what he's able to do is get photos that no other photographer can do because he hasn't aerospace engineering background so he can come into a situation.
Tanzim Elahi
02:13:08 PM
is it possible to do a double major in computer engineering and aerospace engineering

02:13:10 PM
How bout you?
Del Hart
02:13:20 PM
Can we enter the school with a double major?
Bryson Leitch
02:13:25 PM
So far so good
And evaluate forces and stresses an light and angles very very quickly and he said in a number of interviews that he uses his engineering degree every single day so again I'm super proud of just this handful that I've been able to show you 'cause they're using their engineering degrees and significant creative ways.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:13:29 PM
Jeffrey, not at all! we will work with you in what is most convenient to schedule an appointment for scheduling!
Jeffrey Hannam
02:13:41 PM
ok, that is good to hear. Thank you!
One more John amend started empire robotics so he was an undergrad here mechanical and aerospace engineering you CEO and cofounder of empire robotics their company was on the cover of Popular Mechanics his robotic technique was actually some of the.
Late night shows had him and his team on their show to actually do some funny stuff with their robotics so Johns a fantastic guy out of the Boston area and then some of our students are just fantastic I'll just I'll highlight one here for talk for honey he won a recently the aviation week 2020s to watch so these are 20 people across the nation in their twenties in the aerospace field who nation needs to keep an eye on.
Viswesh Seshan
02:14:21 PM
great .. so on an average , do students complete double major within the 4 years?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:14:23 PM
Tanzim, yes it is possible to double major in other types of engineerng. As advisors we would work with you to declare this. You do not have to do this right away as your core classes will be similar.
And he was one of'em we had one before that win as well so we've been averaging one a year in this very elite group of 20 students across the whole nation.
Tanzim Elahi
02:14:40 PM
thank you
What is some of our other students go you can see a few here Megan and Abigail Raytheon an US Navy nuclear engineer there gavins and design engineer at Tesla we've got something going to Graduate School like Clayton who's on the web and are with us Alberto went to Princeton?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:15:02 PM
Delbert, we usually see students declare the double major after their first year and some even after their second so you don't have to right away
Vedant Deshmukh
02:15:14 PM
can a freshmen get an internship?
Megan's in General Dynamics shameless study at MIT Dann buckmaster started his own company so tresca design is his own company so we have a lot of entrepreneurs in our student body as well Jessica's at mode Chris noms at doing some work at NASA as well and then here's just a quick collection of some of the other companies and organizations that hire from our student body every single year so we've got you be grads and all these places.
Del Hart
02:15:19 PM
Thank you!
Putting Tesla and space X and mogan counts pan and you'll recognize a lot of these icons here matter of fact if we we did a survey recently.
Tanzim Elahi
02:15:35 PM
does it take more than four years to do a double major
Del Hart
02:15:48 PM
Adding onto Vedant's question, would a freshman be able to particpate in a co op?
Dani Bilali
02:15:50 PM
Is there a 5-year BS-MS degree in Aerospace?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:15:51 PM
Viswesh, it depends on the student and how many credits they take each semester. However yes it is doable to complete within 4-5 years which is what we see on average
And this data has been updated a little bit but we asked basically last years grads how many are working or in Graduate School this percentage it shows 92 now which is phenomenal I just got the data maybe a day or so ago and it was at 95 so essentially almost almost all of our grads have found a job or they're in grad school somewhere on the right you can see most of them are in engineering.
But not all of'em you know some other men different fields which is cool that's exactly what we want our grads to do go change the world and how you're gifted an what you feel passionate about.
Trevor Conte
02:16:08 PM
So I was going through my checklist for getting to be able to apply for classes but there’s an orientation form that’s in my holds in th Ub hub. Just wondering what I can do about that
Where are they working you can kind of see?
Viswesh Seshan
02:16:11 PM
how many credits can we take max and how is the fee charged? --
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:16:29 PM
Vedant, freshmen are able to get an internship, yes. It is generally our student's responsibility to secure their own internship opportunities. There are a lot of good resources on our website: http://engineering.buffalo.edu/mechanical-aerospace.html
Manav Baiju Notaria
02:16:33 PM
will i get some credits because of A levels
Geographically there scattered really on the left coast on the on the right coast in the middle obviously you would imagine kind of in the northeast a concentration and you see that on the left is there is there starting salary you can kind of see that peak if it's too small for you the peak is in the 60 to $70,000 range.
Or so that's the most common starting salary range obviously that dependent upon where you live.
Jake Conrad
02:16:41 PM
How many students typically graduate with a aerospace or mechanical engineering degree per year?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:16:46 PM
Vedant, we typically recommend getting internships as you progress through your program as you gain more knowledge of the field and major. We see students doing internships around their 2nd to 3rd year
If you're living in Boston or Los Angeles you're probably going to be making more than that because you're spending more than that but you can see a very healthy distribution for starting salaries there as well?
Vedant Deshmukh
02:17:01 PM
oh thank you
Um our students graduate quickly when they graduate on time you can see our our plot the blue points are you BES percentage of students that finish in 4 years and you can see we are well above the national average where were way above Publix across the nations of public universities were even above private universities so you be prides itself on being able to guarantee a finish in 4 years if you wanted to take longer that's up to you.
Edwin Israel
02:17:34 PM
I clicked one of the prior slides on accident and I can't get back on the current slide. How can I do so?
Like I mentioned even most of our dual degrees so mechanical and aero double majors they finish in 4 years as well so you can get out get your job get to Graduate School all within 4 years.
Nick Wolcott
02:17:38 PM
when do we enroll in classes?
Um so this is this is some data from the US Department of Labor.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:17:46 PM
Trevor, you will have access to that orientation data form soon! It should be opening up in the next couple of weeks for students to fill out
This is kind of where the Mechanical Engineers are across the nation.
Ally Hurwitz
02:17:49 PM
How do we set up a 5 year BS and MS in aerospace engineering? Do we do it once we finish our core classes?
Del Hart
02:17:53 PM
Edwin refresh the page?
Trevor Conte
02:18:02 PM
Thx baylee!
Edwin Israel
02:18:14 PM
Worked. Thanks, Hart
You can see we need Mechanical Engineers everywhere so the legend maybe a little bit small for you but the darkest green or where the most jobs in mechanical engineering are and that's the darkest green is between 7500 and about 44,000 Mechanical Engineers in that state so you can see very healthy across the nation lots of jobs in mechanical engineering aerospace is a little bit more particular little bit more specific degree so if you wanted to be an aerospace engineer in say.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:18:22 PM
Nicholas, you will enroll in classes this summer when you are contacted by an advisor to set up your schedule
Nick Wolcott
02:18:35 PM
thanks baylee
Virginia Augusta
02:18:42 PM
Is there joint programming with the business school?
North Dakota you know that may be difficult but you can see the concentrations in California New Mexico Texas Florida Ohio Mass Effect so those are kind of where you're going to see national labs like NASA like sandia national labs in Arizona and New Mexico.
I you're also going to see Maryland DC area there's a lot of contractors there there's a NASA site there as well but New York is just a shade below below that lots of aerospace jobs here as well.
How much are people making in mechanical engineering?
So before I showed you the starting salaries of our students.
Andrew Popovici
02:19:19 PM
Does the BS/MBA program work with aerospace engineering
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:19:22 PM
Virginia, there is a Mechanical Engineering BS/MBA, yes. That is handled mostly through the UB School of Management.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:19:27 PM
Anyone who might be interested in a 5 year BS/MS would usually look to apply for this around 2nd year. As advisors, if you express interest in this we will get you the information you need! No need to apply at this time as a freshman
This is the average salary of all Mechanical Engineers in the country in their state so this is not starting this is average and you can see that darkest blue is 96,000 about 128 thousand so that's the average of all the Mechanical Engineers in that state obviously if you're new you're going to be less than that but if you've been working for 20 years you're probably going to be more than that.
Viswesh Seshan
02:19:37 PM
Do i get any fee reduction for getting chosen to HONORS college?
You can see you know as I mentioned if you're in California you better be making more because you're spending a lot more but you can see salaries are very healthy in the northeast as well New York New York is doing really well with mechanical engineering salaries.
This is the aerospace engineering salaries into aerospace engineers tend to make a little bit more because it's a little bit more specialized degree.
Ally Hurwitz
02:20:10 PM
Thank you Baylee!
Edwin Israel
02:20:12 PM
Is the 5 year BS/MS for Aero only?
California the NASA effects we've got a lot of masters and PhD levels aerospace engineers there so they're going to be making more texts you've got the NASA site Colorado is a hotbed for aerospace engineering that's where Brad cheatham who I mentioned he started 2 companies there you've got the Virginia DC effect with NASA there as well.
Dani Bilali
02:20:18 PM
If you decide to do a double major with Mechanical and Aerospace, can you then go to the 5-year program for an MS and get it in either?
Let me let me focus a little bit more here locally for us these are some of our faculty and these are the ones that have teaching awards so we pride ourselves on giving.
Presenting uh and supplying a world class education our students because one of the reasons is we have fantastic teachers and I hear this all the time I've heard from our students now who have gone online how great the faculty have been and these are just the ones with teaching awards and you can see a lot of you know there's there's almost half of our faculty at once on some kind of teaching award during their time here at you be which is really really great to see we've got new faculty.
As well just this past year we hired 5 new faculty and I'll just highlight them real quick up in the upper left is eleanora boda she does some cool work on space debris she came through.
Hours from McGill University in Canada Craig snowy kind of in the bottom on the left came to us from Texas Tech University where he was a professor but we recruited him here James chin next to him came to us from Kansas State University where he was a professor but he loved what was happening here at you being wanted to be apart of it geon King kinda don't going counterclockwise here in the upper right came to us she got her pH D from Colombia and then went to study at Michigan for a postdoc and she does rehab robotics.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:21:47 PM
At this time we have BS/MBA programs that are a joint effort with SEAS and the School of Management. A student will look to apply for these around junior year.
And then artist year kind of right in the middle at the Top got his PhD actually here at UB and he's 1 of our teaching faculties so he does a lot of interaction with our with our undergrad students let me tell you a bit about.
Some of our faculty in the cool research that can that you can do I'm telling you this because undergrads are involved in just about every one of our research labs they're in my lab there in doctor salix lab there in doctoring get slab there in the labs of what I'm going to show you here so if you want to do research this is a great place to be because all of our faculty who are doing research basically we're working with undergrads in their lab doctor salic on the left there.
Is looking at lipid vesicles flow flows and I had no idea what that was until he told me?
We all have millions of these in our body and it's actually how diseases transferred from one part of the body to another and so he studies basically how these vesicles change shape when there's a disease attached to him and so his research can actually help understand the flow and the transmission of cancer through the body and I asked him could you actually be studying the transmission code 19 through the body and so he started to think about things like that as well his his research could could save my life one day so.
He's doing very cool stuff mattering dad is looking at underwater propulsion.
So he's got a very cool tank you see that kind of colored wing there with with the colored eddies of the flow that's underwater he's got a huge fish tank there's not real fish in it but he has these kind of flapping wings so he studying some very cool underwater propulsion techniques mean wheezing on the left and sumo Chowdhury on the right do a lot of robotics and autonomous systems and if this was automated you could see drones flying around the space is on the left and doctors things lab.
Viswesh Seshan
02:23:58 PM
chat frozen?
Tanzim Elahi
02:24:05 PM
do freshman usually get a chance to do research
You would see walking robots and rolling robots and then the sumos on the right doctor Chowdhury on the right he has some simulation of UAV's and then he has real UAV's in his lab as well so they're always flying around and we got some outdoor testing facilities as well that our students are involved with they do some very cool work.
Doctor Bodie who I mentioned.
Is she doing space debris collection so she's working to try to figure out how we get all this debris?
Peter Cavazzini
02:24:26 PM
Where will the webinars be posted?
Ryan Grant
02:24:26 PM
good movie
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:24:32 PM
Tanzim, we have many freshmen students working in labs and doing research with our professors.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:24:41 PM
Tanzim, absolutely!! you are always welcome to reach out to a professor and inquire about their research and if you can be involved
That's out there in space now so we don't have basically have if you've seen the movie gravity so we basically don't have that in real life which is a very real possibility so she's doing some very cool simulation of space tethers to go get space debris and basically throw it into the atmosphere and burn it up or bring it back into our atmosphere and dispose of it John King who came to us from Michigan who had that I mentioned she's doing rehab rehab robotics so she works with a lot of children who have disabilities.
To help them learn how to either walk from an accident or walk from a disability so she's got a very cool research lab and she she works with our rehab science Department to really look at how to impact people through through robotic rehabs.
Edwin Israel
02:25:09 PM
How can freshman apply to do research?
Um not dress bejanyan doctor I do some real cool work in design and 3 D printing and robotics as well so they're looking at advanced CAD systems that.
Ebony Cumbo Grant
02:25:46 PM
is there any sort of makerspace or lab where students can use 3d printers or anything during their free time?
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:25:50 PM
Edwin, students develop relationships with faculty centered around similar interests and then inquire about research with them
Those of you in school I know it's a number of you have done CAD before but you probably use your keyboard and your mouse they're looking at CAD using gestures which is pretty cool but they're also looking at CAD using just brain waves so if you see the picture kind of in the bottom in the middle there actually now have a CAD system where if I were to think of a cube or a sphere it pops up on the screen so no movement from me which is just phenomenal you can kind of think on.
Dani Bilali
02:26:00 PM
If you decide to do a double major with Mechanical and Aerospace, can you then go to the 5-year program for an MS and get it in either?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:26:04 PM
Edwin, best way to get involved in research is to ask professors (send an email), or visit the Experiential Learning Network: http://www.buffalo.edu/eln.html
On how fast CAD programs could could work if they could keep up with the speed of our thought as whereas we're coming up with shapes and assemblies and modules but they do a lot of work with you eaves as well 3 D printing of UAV's very cool work in their lab.
And now let me let me let me go down to some of our teaching lab so that was some of our research labs.
Now are teaching labs very cool research labs we've got state of the art facilities anywhere from the wind tunnel on the bottom left.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:26:36 PM
The webinar will be posted here: http://engineering.buffalo.edu/home/prospective/webinars.html
Leighton Collins
02:26:49 PM
I would definitely recommend doing research here at UB. They're doing amazing things; I wish I I had done it sooner than I did!
Brea Murdock
02:26:49 PM
Do you have a VEX Robotics club? I am very dedicated to robotics and it is my main hobby. I would like to continue my participation in the program in college. I know there is a robotics club, but I was wondering about VEX specifically.
Joshua Robinson
02:26:54 PM
when can we register for our classes as a transfer student?
That's part of our aerospace program so if you're an aerospace engineer major you get to interact with the wind tunnel we've got our 3 D printing lab we've got our robotics lab we've got our virtual simulation lab in the bottom right so if you take our vehicle that dynamics class you actually get into the Ford Taurus and then you get to drive around and basically what's equivalent to something you would see at universal or Disney we basically have a 6 degree of freedom motion base that's exactly the same one that they would have a universal if you're writing.
Ryan Grant
02:27:18 PM
very cool
Spiderman ride or the Star Wars ride at Disney that's basically what we have in our facility here so students can when they're studying about road vehicle dynamics they can be in that facility and they can be moving around feeling what it's like to be in a car that has an unstable center gravity for instance so they get to have some experiential.
Zone to what they're learning in the classroom.
Cal Hinkley
02:27:37 PM
Can a freshman join the SAE club?
And we've got some manufacturing labs and then our fluid thermal lab in the upper left that that unit that you're looking on the upper left is $25,000 and we've got 5 AM so it's really state of the art our students enjoy learning from these facilities.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:27:45 PM
Joshua, it's a similar process for transfer and freshmen. You will be contacted by our office to set up a meeting to speak with an advisor to go over your transfer credits and what courses to register for!
Viswesh Seshan
02:27:51 PM
what benefits do honors college offer ?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:27:51 PM
This will be in the summer
Just to point out real quickly we do have a minor in manufacturing so if you're interested in 3 D printing or kind of the manufacturing field in general you can pick up a minor along the way if you're interested in robotics.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:28:07 PM
Calahan, absolutely! We encourage all of our students to get involved in clubs as soon as possible.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:28:22 PM
Viswesh, you can find more information on the honors college and its benefits here: https://honors.buffalo.edu/
You can pick up a minor along the way as well as we've got a new minor in robotics that a lot of our students are taking so if you just Google robotic minor you be you'll find it or manufacturing minor you'll be you'll find that as well some of our student clubs there's a lot of'em I'll just point out a few you see kind of our seds group are nano sack group in the upper left their building satellites that are actually being deployed into space.
As there's our rocket team out in New Mexico from last summer.
Viswesh Seshan
02:28:33 PM
great thanks
You can see them there in the upper right at sunrise right before they're about to launch their their rocket you see the bottom left how big it is so they fabricate that entire thing here.
Nicholas Fretto
02:28:45 PM
What is the next steps to complete after paying the tuition deposit?
They go on a big road trip out to New Mexico every summer and they launch it in the national finals so you see them under the tent there on the right kind of getting ready for the day.
Society of automotive engineers they build are clean snowmobile are off road vehicle.
I got a number of vehicles that they're building their testing I see them driver in driving around campus and testing out their vehicles you be robotics team or club they're building all kinds of robots and a lot of our students are involved in that.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:29:23 PM
Nicholas and Edwin: https://admissions.buffalo.edu/accepted/steps/index.php
Ally Hurwitz
02:29:25 PM
When will be apply for housing and set up the dorm situation?
Um we also have students competing for national challenges like like the NASA big idea challenge NASA has realized that they can't solve every problem that they want to solve by themselves.
Ally Hurwitz
02:29:55 PM
we*
So they have basically crowdsourced some of their big challenges to universities in a couple of years ago they crowdsourced the challenge of bringing large payloads to Mars you're probably familiar with the Mars Rover which is a phenomenal accomplishment but it was a very small payload vehicle if we're really going to do something significant on Mars we have to get a lot of car go up there and so NASA it's a big big challenge that NASA said we need help with this so.
They issued a challenge we have deep connections to NASA.
Viswesh Seshan
02:30:04 PM
i too paid the tuition deposit , when can i get my i20?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:30:07 PM
Ally, you will want to submit your housing deposit via Campus Living: https://www.buffalo.edu/campusliving.html
I saw this challenge and and I spent some time in asset I reached out to these students said Hey do you want to do this for your senior design project.
Jake Conrad
02:30:22 PM
How many students typically graduate with a aerospace or mechanical engineering degree per year?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:30:25 PM
The housing app is now available!
And they said yeah we got we know nothing about Mars and I said well neither do I let's let's go ahead and figure this out so they competed they entered the competition it goes through rounds so they made it to the Top 12 so we then we kept going with it and they were basically went from fall to spring semester and they wanted to keep competing.
So then we got to select the final 4.
Ally Hurwitz
02:30:39 PM
Thank you!!
NASA paid all 3 of these gentlemen to fly down and NASA Langley in Virginia and compete in the final 4 it was us Illinois Purdue Ann.
Viswesh Seshan
02:30:53 PM
is the housing deposit mandatory to get an i20?
Georgia Tech I think was the last one.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:30:55 PM
Viswesh, you will want to work with International Admissions for the next steps on your i20
And and so we were all competing it was very cool uh Illinois team won that year but the NASA team was so impressed that they gave all the students from all 4 teams internships to NASA.
It's it's amazing 'cause 3 through these 3 gentlemen all turn.
Viswesh Seshan
02:31:16 PM
can u send me their email?
Ebony Cumbo Grant
02:31:23 PM
What dorm do Mechanical Engineering students usually live in?
Around their internships to NASA because they had better internships I couldn't believe it till they told me but they did have some pretty phenomenal internships and then Lastly I'll end with this are spaceballs which look at.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:31:56 PM
International Admissions: http://www.buffalo.edu/internationaladmissions.html
In this competition, they're looking at a lunar Rover, so this is actually in Houston. NASA in Houston has basically a lunar landscape that they've set up for this competition, and so our students competed qualified for the national finals. So they flew down to Houston and you see, they are basically kind of on the right hand side and the you be blue. They placed third nationally. If I kind of focus if your attention on the.
Ally Hurwitz
02:32:11 PM
Also ^ what about aerospace students?
Ryan Grant
02:32:15 PM
nice
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:32:29 PM
I don't believe that there is a specific dorm room for ME or AE students.
Left third of the of the picture. There you'll see a gentleman wearing and I love my T-shirt. MIT place six that year so you be third MIT 6 just saying our students are phenomenal. They did a fantastic job in that competition and they do in many of these competitions. So with that I'm going to stop going to join. Kind of the question and answer session that I know you guys have been flying around with, but I kind of turn it over.
This is my phone email that's obviously Department website. If you want to contact me offline, feel free.
But I'm going to ask Andrew and see how it's going and see if there's any questions I can help help answer.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:32:47 PM
Nope no specific dorm, however you can opt in to the Living Learning Community: https://www.buffalo.edu/campusliving/find-your-home/living-learning-communities.html
Brea Murdock
02:32:50 PM
Do you have a VEX robotics program?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:32:56 PM
You will see there is an engineering option
Ally Hurwitz
02:32:57 PM
Is there a way to dorm with another student of the same major?
Peter Cavazzini
02:33:09 PM
Where will the webinars be posted?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:33:20 PM
Ally, yes that can be something you look to do in your housing application via Campus Living
Ebony Cumbo Grant
02:33:23 PM
is there like a 3d printing lab that students are free to se?
Stephanie Yuen
02:33:29 PM
what is the ratio of male to female students in the ME major?
Edwin Israel
02:33:53 PM
Mr. Lewis, are you involved in any research yourself
Brea Murdock
02:34:02 PM
What is the female to male ratio for mechanical engineering at your school? I have been discouraged from mechanical engineering from boys at my school. How do you deal with those types of issues?
James Jerozal
02:34:13 PM
Could you also explain a bit about the flight sim I heard you had?
Yeah, great question. Uhm when I was an undergrad uh, 30 years ago. Research for Undergrads was not even a thing. You know it's not something we were any of us were thinking about. Now it's commonplace. A few years ago I had a sophomore. This is probably 10 or 15 years ago. I had a sophomore come to me and ask about getting involved in research and I had some seniors working with me. Sophomore was a little out of the ordinary at the time.
Brea Murdock
02:34:42 PM
How many female teachers do you have?
Andrew Popovici
02:34:50 PM
This is off-topic, but what kind of computer do you recommend for aerospace?
But now, um, it's quite common. I've got up. I had a sophomore. I've got a sophomore right now working with me. I've also gotta June. I've got a senior who started when he was a sophomore and its freshman actually are getting involved in some research that there's not a lot you can do as a freshman. Obviously because you haven't learned enough to contribute too much on the technical side of things. But that's OK for most professors because they want you to learn just being in the environment. I like, I said, I've got a sophomore right now that I agreed to mentor, and he's in my.
Lab doing some very cool work on additive manufacturing and his first semester. You know he didn't know a lot and so he was just listening. He was meeting with my graduate students meeting with me, asking questions, reading papers, and now he's doing a phenomenal job. Now he's basically got a scholarship to do research and he's doing a great job with that research. So I would recommend if you're thinking about research as an undergrad, absolutely get involved. It's a great resume builder as well, but it also.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:35:46 PM
Brea, we currently have 6 female professors who teach both UG and graduate courses.
Teaches you about the field and what's happening in research. How you do this? Uhm, I would get on our website once you arrive to you, be and look at basically our faculty and see the areas that they're working in in the areas that resonate with you. I'd shoot him an email, introduce yourself, see if you can have a few minutes of their time just to see if they've got any openings for an undergrad student. It would help if you went to professors that you have a class with.
Brea Murdock
02:36:03 PM
Okay thank you.
Blake Logel
02:36:14 PM
When do the classes specific to your major start? After freshman year?
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:36:28 PM
Brea, I apologize... 8 actually!
So if you wanted to wait a little bit, maybe to your sophomore year when you start taking our classes, that's OK too, because then you can have a tether point with the professor. You could say, hey, look, I'm in your, I'm in your sophomore class. I really enjoy what we're learning in here can I can I talk to you about joining your research lab? Those are the easiest ways to do that. I would also suggest when you reach out to the Professor.
Brea Murdock
02:36:36 PM
Even better!
Do you have done some of your homework? Read their web page? Maybe even go skim through one of their papers that they have in their web page. Get a decent idea for what they're doing, 'cause if they ask you, hey, why do you want to join my my research lab?
Bryson Leitch
02:36:47 PM
Do a lot of students transition to a MBA in business after engineering ?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:36:52 PM
Blake, yes you start some specialization in your second year: Thermodynamics, Intro to Practice, etc.
Blake Logel
02:37:15 PM
Alright cool, thank you!
You know, I I don't know, uh, I just want to do research. It's not going to be as strong of an answer as if you could say, well, I really like what you're doing in 3D printing. You're looking at kind of a new materials. I've looked at plastic 3D printing and I know you're doing some metal 3D printing. I would really like to expand my knowledge in the metal 3D printing. Much better answer than just saying I don't know just because I want to do research to do a little homework that always comes across to me is very impressive.
Edwin Israel
02:37:23 PM
Are all teacher webpages their own sites, or can they be accessed through the UB site?
So we have I mentioned one of my sophomores is getting some money for their research. My senior is also has won a number of scholarships to do research. There's some there's some scholarship opportunities to for undergrads to do research. Thank you for the question.
What else you got, Andrew?
Or or late in the day late and how you want to pop in here and say anything because you can fill in some of the gaps you can talk about the student.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:38:02 PM
Edwin, through the MAE web page you would be able to go to the faculty directory and see all of our faculty pages.
Perspective on this so feel free to pop in Layton if you want to add some things to what I said.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:38:07 PM
Bryson, the MBA program is unique for those that wish to pursue the business, management or leadership side to engineering and have that background. We see students taking advantage of this before they head out into the field
Dani Bilali
02:38:14 PM
Can you do the 5-year MS program if you double major in Aerospace and Mechanical?
Bryson Leitch
02:38:21 PM
Ok Thanks Baylee
Research is definitely great at UV. It's one of the things I really like here, I'm.
Joshua Robinson
02:38:38 PM
As a transfer student from Genesee Community College, what advice would you give to succeed here at UB?
I was really happy when I started working under a doctor Chowdhury as I started really doing a lot of cool stuff.
Get a lot more experience doing a lot of more nice things or.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:39:02 PM
Follow up to webpages for profs: http://engineering.buffalo.edu/mechanical-aerospace/people/faculty.html
A lot of interesting stuff going on. I work with swarm robotics in his lab and it's really cool. I like it alot, really challenges you and gives you a lot of experience doing things you wouldn't normally do.
And it teaches you a lot of.
Figuring stuff out like tinkering and.
Jeffrey Hannam
02:39:16 PM
Will all of our classes be on-campus, or will there be classes online?
Ally Hurwitz
02:39:27 PM
What companies do UB graduates tend to work with in New York specifically?
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:39:27 PM
Joshua, that's a great question. I would recommend getting involved as much as possible. Getting involved in clubs and student groups helps make connections and can really assist in your success here.
Liz Edman
02:39:35 PM
Is it hard to get into a Living Learning community as a freshman?
Kathy ENE
02:39:37 PM
Are there any work study jobs in aero?
I really wish I started sooner. I was a little late. I started in my graduate but if you can start in undergrad, I know that there are a lot of Undergrads in doctor chatteris lab that I work with. They're great and they do a lot of cool stuff too. Like Oh. I'm honestly jealous that there they started as Undergrads goes. I wish I did that, so I definitely recommend that they're doing really cool stuff.
Cool, thank you Laden. Did were you mechanical or arrow or both undergrad?
Mechanical for undergrad and mechanical for grad now too.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:40:05 PM
Jeffrey, you might have a mix of both! I would say the huge majority will be on-campus
But you're doing research in you, Evie swarms.
Brea Murdock
02:40:15 PM
Is there a VEX robotics club?
Jeffrey Hannam
02:40:18 PM
good to know, Thank you
Right, so you know mechanical is a very flexible degree. That's why it's, uh, it's quite easy to do that double major and.
Yeah, there's so much overlap between mechanical and Aero.
Anything else you want to add later?
Yeah, there's a lot of similarities. Use a lot.
No, keep going, keep going. I just said it was there anything else you want to add?
Edwin Israel
02:40:39 PM
How would the classes look like for ME undergrads, like Humanities vs. Core
Baylee Snodgrass
02:40:40 PM
Liz, not at all! if there is space in the community it's a great opportunity for our freshmen
Trevor Conte
02:40:43 PM
Is there a way to do the 5 year ms program along with the double major?
Yeah, there's a lot of similarities between the two. I know that there are have a lot of cloud. I had a lot of classes with a lot of aerospace majors, they just have.
A few other classes that they take, but most of the stuff is. I usually have a lot. I usually had a lot of classes with aerospace majors and a lot of the stuff you use.
A lot of the stuff you learn in mechanical engineering.
I'm sure applies to aerospace and vice versa. There's a lot of similar concepts.

You've you've pretty much touched on most of it, and in the in the in the slides when you talked about various clubs and stuff like that, there's there's been quite a few questions about that as well. We did have a few questions about number of female faculty members, so I was able to quickly pull pull that together.
Blake Logel
02:41:57 PM
What kind of things do most internships in the engineering field do? Or is it more specific to the internship itself?
And it's it's that's a good.
Kind of measuring stick, I would think a good selling point that we do have.
We do have a number of female professors and researchers who are doing really exciting things and are kind of ties back to the research point. Just very willing to take on.
You know, in in the same way that a male professor would email, professors are great resources, although.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:42:36 PM
Blake, in my experience with students it would be more specific to the internship itself and the opportunity presented in order to apply your coursework to the day to day
Ally Hurwitz
02:42:47 PM
What aerospace companies do UB students gravitate towards after graduating?
Let me jump in there, Andrew on that female faculty. This is. This is another very unique element of our Department. So the national average in mechanical engineering departments for female faculty is 13% for Aerospace Engineering, it's 11%.
Here you be were over 20%.
Blake Logel
02:43:17 PM
Thanks!
Um, which is which is just ridiculous, but it speaks to the culture that we have, and there's four pillars that we have in our in our culture. Basically, when are when are within our Department, it's collegiality, its collaboration, it's achievement and its integrity. And at the core, if you're going to collaborate and at a high level at a high level of achievement, high level of innovation and be collegial and treat each other with integrity, diversity is kind of at the core of all that.
Brea Murdock
02:43:53 PM
Yay
And so that's basically one of our our core elements, and you can see that in how many female faculty members we have, so I don't know if somebody picked up on that as I was highlighting. But if you go to our website you'll see how many female faculty is we have. So when I say 20%, I'm talking about the full time faculty that we have here and we just just hired two more faculty that are coming next year. One of those is also female, so.
50% of the ones were hiring for next year or female, so it's really really a cool dynamic to have. You know, science is clear, the diversity breeds innovation.
Alex Kreuzer
02:44:07 PM
What are typical class sizes for first year students in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering?
And so if we're going to be talking if we're talking and claiming to be a very innovative Department with innovative research and innovative teaching.
Isaac Chin
02:44:29 PM
I noticed that the math curriculum goes up to differential equations. Do we need to have linear algebra or boundary value problems as well?
Nick Wolcott
02:44:29 PM
If you dual major in mechanical and aero, do you have two senior projects or is there a way to combine the two
We have to be an embracing diversity which we do, and so, um, I thank you for for elite either asking it or or realizing it are recognizing it as well, but I wanted to jump in with that. Thanks, Andrew.
Edwin Israel
02:44:30 PM
Are we going to be in those large lecture hall classes?
Baylee Snodgrass
02:44:48 PM
Alexander, your first year is going to be many of your core classes: calculus, physics, chemistry and those are going to be larger courses.
Um, so I've been a couple questions now about class size is an instead of just typing I can just talk about this. So the oh I see Bailey here has kind of jumped in so.
Liz Edman
02:45:03 PM
Is there any way for us to connect with current aero undergrads? I'd love to talk with someone in SEDS about the club.
Um, your first year, and especially for your mechanical classes, it's going to be pretty mixed. There's going to be certain situations, certain classes where you have.
You know larger classes in in larger lecture halls. Some of your elective classes are going to have, you know.
Thomas Kranson
02:45:30 PM
How many undergrads are in Aerospace engineering?
Joshua Robinson
02:45:32 PM
What will the classes be like for a transfer student from GCC? I will be coming in as a Junior
2020 four people in it, so it really kind of depends on the point you are in the program, whether it's whether it's a required course that you're in, that the entire junior cohort of in those are going to be your larger classes. But to that point I will say that I think that our faculty do a really, really good job of being available to students, and even though there are.
Large lecture halls and a lot of students in in the rooms. I think that our faculty do a really good job of making it seem like a more personal experience.
Matt Syzdek
02:45:57 PM
Does UB engineering provide/encourage Co-op opportunites? Also, what percentage of engineering students participate in internships?
So it's a very long way to answer a class size.
Austin Huntress-Kennedy
02:46:04 PM
Will my AP credits from social sciences courses knock off prerequisites for my Aerospace Engineering degree?
I'll jump in there as well and just give a little bit of history. So just, um.
Maybe six or Seven years ago, our class sizes were enormous. I mean, I was teaching a class of 250 students.
Shannon Phillips
02:46:19 PM
Brea, you asked an excellent question. I hope Dr. Kemper's response helped you understand the UB culture. Our Women in Science and Engineering program will also host a web session next week to share more about the programming we offer for women. Stay tuned for the invite.
Viswesh Seshan
02:46:21 PM
how many core mechanical subjects will a honors college student attend?
And then we realized it just wasn't. Uhm, it wasn't effective either. On the student side or the professor side, you know it was. It wasn't a great experience, so we moved to a multisection model for all of our core classes. And now what used to be a 250 section course is now, for instance, three sections of 80.
Brea Murdock
02:46:49 PM
Yes he did. Sounds awesome! Thank you so much.
An an those sections are coordinated. They share the same syllabi there. Basically on the same pace the instructors are on the same page and we found that actually students it's beneficial for students 'cause they have a smaller classrooms, more access to TAS and professors are professors. Prefer it because they get to know their students better. But also our students are realizing that now if they have, for instance an interview or some kind of conflict, they can go to one of the other sections.
And pick up on essentially the same lecture, because things are roughly moving more or less the same pace, and so there's a lot of benefits here. So now all of our core courses have been broken up into multi sections.
Which is a tremendous advantage.
Edwin Israel
02:47:32 PM
How do you guys handle AP credits? I'm taking AP Physics C right now, and was wondering if the score I get on the exam have any weight when it comes to my classes.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:47:39 PM
Austin, AP credits and scores can help you in your degree with things like general education requirements, calculus, sciences. Take a look at this chart to see what could work for you: https://registrar.buffalo.edu/tc/pdfs/APchart.pdf
I'll just hang out and wait, Andrew, if you want to pose anything else to Maine.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:48:09 PM
for everthing AP, be sure to look at that chart! We as advisors will then work with you!
I've laid and you want to jump in if you think there's anything I should comment on with, I mean.
There was, uh, I'm just actually working.

Can u talk about entrepreneurship opps? Maker space?
Ebony Cumbo Grant
02:48:17 PM
is there a communal 3d printing space?
I'm looking on our, uhm, I'm on our web Department website now. There is a question about connecting with.
Current students in the example was in said's trying to connect with current students.
We know that on our website and I just need to find it I there is oh so if you go to the mechanical and aerospace engineering website there is in the undergraduate tab, there's a student organizations. There's a drop down box and then you can click on student organizations. All of our major clubs are linked here with a description of the club. I'll link to the club website. That would be a really good way to.
Some kind of connect with them an you know kind of. Start building those connections.
If I wanted to put that out there.
Ally Hurwitz
02:49:16 PM
yes!
All right doctor Lewis I'm going to jump in with 2 questions that I saw in there one is what is unique compared to other colleges about the aeromechanical experience here at you be.
So what's unique? Well, so a bit of background, so there's. There's an accreditation body called a bet. Uhm, they accredit all national programs.
So you know. Obviously I would suggest if you're looking at a mechanical or aerospace program, make sure there a bet accredited that basically is a stamp of accreditation and so basically what I bet tells us is this is what you need to teach for mechanical engineering and for aerospace engineering. So to some extent all mechanical engineering programs across the nation are quite similar. So are all aerospace engineering programs across the nation there quite similar because?
Bret Rokitka
02:50:31 PM
What about internships and co-ops?
Ally Hurwitz
02:50:37 PM
For some reason I can't hear Mr. Lewis
We're told by a bet. Basically what we what we need to teach now, how we teach it is where we can differentiate ourselves. So I was able to show you some of our undergraduate labs. We have very unique labs. We've got our wind tunnel. We've got our robotics lab. We've got our 3D printing lab. I mean, there's some other places that have things like that. But because we're the only aerospace program insooni, we are able to invest, and especially in our arrow program.
Edwin Israel

Maybe more than some of the other programs around the nation, but also it's the culture, right? It's the experience that you have your in an urban environment in Buffalo with tons of things to do. Very cool location on the waterfront.
Andrew Fogelsonger
02:51:06 PM
The best resource for our internships, where students have done internships previously, etc. is here: http://engineering.buffalo.edu/mechanical-aerospace/undergraduate/student_services/internships.html
Andrew Popovici
02:51:13 PM
Could you talk about the flight simulators available on campus
I know it in the senior survey that we do we ask our students what's the coolest thing or what's their most memorable memory or experience of being AUB and some of it is student clubs and some of it is a chorus or professor but a lot of it is just the relationships that are built here which doesn't surprise me because it's just a culture of collegiality it's a culture of collaboration it's a culture of celebrating achievement we make a big deal out of our students successes I showed you just.
Just like one of our big student awards we've got dozens of those it could I could have spent an hour just on our student awards we make a big deal out of those and then integrity you know I think we do a very good job training students men and women of character because they're going to go out and design products that have an impact on people's lives and so and then obviously being part of the State University system the value for your degree at a place like you be is phenomenal.

Like a research culture that we have here do you want to get involved in research great place to be like Layton mentioned you want to have a place on urban campus with a lot of things to do and you know just just a very cool scene here great place to come high value for your dollar obviously unique aerospace program in the Sony system so that's where you want to look at for your own experience.
Liz Edman
02:53:17 PM
great answer, thx
Del Hart
02:53:19 PM
Thank you
This has to be online obviously this is a very unique scenario that none of us have ever lived through because it's hard to kind of show you and tell you all the very cool things there would have been a tour that showed you some of those facilities I had to kind of capture photos for you but the facilities are phenomenal are robotics lab are you AV labs the one latent works in is awesome I mentioned some outdoor testing facilities so if you get involved in drones and robotics there's an outdoor testing facility.
That we have and we're developing and building that now so thanks for the question.
Certainly very relevant and I hope I was able to answer some of that thanks Bailey.
Yeah not a problem you're getting money thank you for that against her.
Edwin Israel
02:53:56 PM
do you guys give out the Fundamentals to Engineering (FE) review and preparation for the PE exam
Uhm I guess another question that was in there too that I personally couldn't answer but what aerospace companies do you be students usually gravitate towards after graduating.
Edwin Israel
02:54:04 PM
If so, when
Yeah a great question uhm so there's a number of'em I mentioned a space X obviously Tesla is in the space industry as well we have Tesla right here in our backyard you know they've they've created a huge operation here in Buffalo so we have great connections with them Amazon I mentioned I'm I'm a good collaborator with one of their primary lead engineers and so he tells me all the time look we are we are desperate for more aerospace engineers so.
You be is one of their targeted institutes as far as Amazon goes and he spends about half the year here in Buffalo he's trying to actually create an Amazon presence here in Buffalo and so because of.
For many reasons but one of'em is primarily because of our aerospace program he came through it actually so he's a grad of ours knows how great our program is and now wants to develop an Amazon presence in Buffalo and higher our students so very cool I mentioned NASA we have very deep connections at NASA many of the sites so we place many students every year at NASA sites whether it's in Texas or Florida or Langley in Virginia or Glen in Ohio.
Um are Goddard um lots of these places JPL the Jet Propulsion lab out in California we have students going there and turning their every year an getting hired there every year so those are some of the big ones obviously we've got a lot of we've got a handful of students going to like space X suppliers so you probably haven't heard of these companies but they're in the aerospace industry because they're making components for space X.
Jake Rogers
02:55:57 PM
What type of computer do we need?
And for Tesla and for NASA you know so there there in the space industry they're kind of embedded in that so there's a number of companies on their airspace side.
Thanks Bailey and thanks to everyone ask that.
So we've got a just a few more minutes Bailey is that right at least on that part of the interaction.
Yeah and we're getting a lot of questions about what types of computers do we need I know that you be doesn't specifically recommend a type of computer but is there something that you would say yeah that works well for aerospace mechanical.
No yeah like Bailey said there's not really any uhm if you go if you go to yeah if you go to the uh it's the school of engineering node services CNS sins.
Nick Harbison
02:56:54 PM
how big are the freshman lecture sizes?
Not said but sins uhm they basically have some recommendations on on platforms but they support.
You see they support Mac they support Linux uhm I see a blend of PC's and Macs from our students and our faculty I would guess we're probably half and half so it's really personal preference you know we supply a lot of the software but you'll get you'll get a sense on the hardware requirements at the sins web page but really it's a personal preference.
Darnell Rice
02:57:41 PM
Thank you. As a Mom, this was wonderful. My son is moving in the right direction through his decision to enter this school.
Hum, I have. I haven't HP elite book.
It's pretty old and it still.
Keeps up with everything I need to do, so I mean I don't know. I don't have any.
Specifics on the specifications of it.
From and I can I can speak to that too for hand from having students come to my office to to be advised and ask questions about, you know?
Wiley Moslow
02:58:16 PM
How many total students do you expect in the freshman class for the department?
Anything really having to do with the programming classes and stuff. I have students walking in my office with Mac books. I have students walking in my office with pretty much any any brand of computer you can think of.
They all seem to work and I don't know that you could make a bad decision necessarily, so just putting that out there, current current students aren't using one specific type. They're all kind of.
Whatever is feasible for you should be fine, I would say.
Baylee Snodgrass
02:58:47 PM
Nicholas, freshmen lectures can be large (200 people) but you will have recitations which break those down into 25 person groups
Brea Murdock
02:58:49 PM
I see that there are many robotics clubs throughout the slides. I do not see any pictures of VEX. Do you have a VEX robotics club?
And there are there are. There are also a lot of labs and resources on campus for you to use.
Arnav Mohapatra
02:59:14 PM
Are there any clubs that focus on aviation and possibly getting a private pilots license?
Right, that's that's a good point to you. Don't necessarily have to have your own. There are like, like Clayton just said, there are a lot of computer Labs, Library Services, library spaces. There's a lot of opportunity for you to use campus computer as well.

That's obviously setting up to be a professional engineer which you take the PE exam 5 years later but I took the FYI exam when I graduated I think is the very best the best time to take it 'cause everything just kind of fresh in your memory so we do encourage that here and we make that available for seniors who are graduating.

Um, speaking before about the computers and all that there was there was a question a little bit ago just about if you're experiencing problems with your computer or you need help downloading software or anything along those lines. There is a question in the chat about how easy is it to get around campus. That kind of ties into the weather thing too. If you, for the most part on North campus, especially if you don't want to go outside, you probably don't have to. Most of the buildings, specially not away for awhile when you get away from the dorm for most most of the.

Buildings around the student arm union and things like that, and various classrooms. They're all connected either with you know, bridges or or the jet up against each other enough that you don't really have to go outside if you don't want to.
Generally don't. If I have to go from somewhere else, I try to stay inside as much as I possibly can, so it's not too bad.

I'm working a few questions specifically about internships in co-ops when where how those types of things I guess so could you comment I guess on the structure of our program when it comes to internships in co-ops.
Most of our students do internships, some of them finding find him on their own, but we have a very, very helpful career placement center that has a dedicated staff.
I've dedicated staff members just for engineering.
Edwin Israel
03:08:40 PM
I'm looking at the AP credit PDF. Is the UB articulation the classes you would be taking instead ones you'd normally take, or classes you'd be exempt from?
And so we have a technical um, career fair in the fall where most most most companies are coming to hire for interns. But a lot of them are coming to hire fault full time as well. So we help place students in internships Co option option whenever Coop School. But we do have some students do a Co op experience and so that delays in their graduation. Obviously a little bit.
Baylee Snodgrass
03:09:20 PM
Ryan, there are no restrictions on owning a car and having it on campus. Many people do. If you don't it's easy to get around campus via walking or our campus shuttle, the Stampede
Kathy ENE
03:09:23 PM
Any opportunity for study abroad?
Brandon Soto
03:09:25 PM
Does UB accept AP scores of 4 or only 5?
But if they want to set up a coop experience and sometimes interns turn into Co op so a student intern will have a great summer and the company will ask them to stay for the fall, then it's just on the student to figure out how to manage their program. If they want to stay for another semester. So that's where are advising team comes in and helps kind of workout. Some of those those details. But the program is set up to really house intern ships very, very well.
Uh, we have an internship class that you can take in the summer as well so you could get credit.
That could be a technical elective as an internship class. You could take an intern in the fall for credit. You could take an intern in the spring for credit.

Kathy, information for study abroad opportunities would be here: http://www.buffalo.edu/studyabroad.html
Uh, an internship, so um, really robust internship environment here. There are some co-ops, but that's more kind of on a one off experience, but certainly we support co-ops if the opportunity exists. And if the student and the company wants to make that happen.

For AP the UB Course Articulation column would be the course you would obtain credit for if you earned a specific score in the AP exam
Jeffrey Hannam
03:10:07 PM
I am taking English for a CAP credit through NCCC at my high school. Will this transfer to UB without any problems?
We do I didn't mention, but we do have a mechanical engineering a five year BS MBA program.
Uh, so you could get the PS plus the NBA, which would typically take six years. You can get in five, so we have about 10 or 15 students doing that every year.
Um, and they're getting just phenomenal job offers. As you can imagine, is a lot of companies really value that engineering background plus the management understanding?
So that's, uh, that's an option you have here as well.
Baylee Snodgrass
03:10:45 PM
Yes, courses via NCCC or any community college that you take in high school can work toward requirements as transfer credits
Edwin Israel
03:10:47 PM
For the UB Articulation question, so you wouldn't take the class

if you still wanted to, you could we would just decline the AP credit
Just to put it out there for any of you guys that after we get wrapped up here have questions for me.
If you about classes you're going to take, or pretty much anything you guys have been asking now you've had questions as we've gone along here. If you go to the MAY website, doctor Lewis put it in his last slide that we can still see here. If you go to the staff directory page.
Baylee Snodgrass
03:11:48 PM
Scores of 4 or 5 are typical AP scores in order to achieve credit for a class

It would be great if u could talk abt the question i asked earlier
I'll address a question about subjects in the space, uhm?
Area that that we collaborate with. So it's very broad. As latent mentioned, you know he's working on drone swarms.
Shardul Saptarshi
03:13:33 PM
i'm a vegetarian. Does it make sense to get a meal plan?
Yeah, that's more kind of this atmosphere, but we're also have projects looking at outside of our atmosphere. I mentioned doctor boda looking at space debris removal, space debris tethers. Doctor christidis is one of the leading global experts in satellite navigation. We have ourselves team and their sponsored by major space organizations, so there's a lot of topics. If you go to our website and just kind of.
Brandon Soto
03:13:47 PM
Is your aerospace program more astronautical or aeronautical?
Look through our our faculty. You can see how many of 'em are involved in in space related work, so the Jet Propulsion Lab works with us. I mentioned Amazon already SpaceX NASA is one of our big partners.
Alexa Schultz
03:14:05 PM
when i visited before there were a lot of food options
You know there's some of that. I know I'm forgetting right now, but there's a number of topics. Space propulsion is a huge one. The Department of Energy is working with us on future space propulsion systems, basically hypersonics if anybody is familiar with that term. That's what we've got a lot of expertise. Here. You be as well. So thanks for your question. Hope I was able to give some detail there.

Here's a good resource for food options on campus: https://myubcard.com/dining/locations
I see a question about the aerospace more.
Astronautical aeronautical, it's actually probably pretty well balanced.
And then we've got. We've got strength and partners in both of those those areas, so, um.
Eleanor Bodom, one of our most recent hires, adds depth to the space side to the Astro side. We've got doctor James tint James Chen, also one of our recent hires adds more strength.
Um to the arrow side. So it's really it's, uh, I think it's a very nice blend, probably equally balanced.
And I see a question here about stoves in Microwaves for freshman dorms.
Dev Modi
03:18:30 PM
By keeping the current situation in mind, are we able to study at UB by person or it is going to be online?
I'm not sure about all dorms, but I have been to a few and they've all had stoves at least. Usually they have a community stove on, sometimes a microwave for cooking. I know a lot of people use to cook in my dorm and other dorms. People like to cook so they have those usually.
Ebony Cumbo Grant
03:18:49 PM
about how many ME/AE undergrad students are on campus?
So if you're talking about the fall, we don't know yet, um.
No. We were making preparations for any scenario weather fully on campus.
Fully online, uh, some kind of hybrid? Um, were making preparations for all of 'em. Here's what I do know that because were making preparations so early and because of the quality of our faculty, we will put together world class education for the fall.
Edwin Israel
03:19:49 PM
if we end up doing online learning, will we be charged for Room/Board
National were planning on so we don't know exactly what that's going to look like. An if if the institution is telling you that they know what it's going to look like, they're wrong because no one knows. I mean, we're so we're looking at all possible combinations deploying our resources in our expertise to get ready for whatever we've got in front of us. So stay tuned. We will communicate as soon as we know more, but just know that we're working hard behind the scenes.
To get ready for the fall no matter what happens.
A couple questions I've seen most recently. Now how many MAY an aerospace undergrad students do you roughly have in the Department?
Roughly across all four years, about 1200.
You know that in the in there really are core courses. Which are, you know parts off more, but junior and senior.
Yeah, I think it's more a five 600 and so that's why we've gone to these multisection models are labs are all in small groups, so we have many, many lab sections, so you're not.
It the wind tunnel with 60 other people just kind of watching experiment the arrow. The wind tunnel will have basically 10 or fewer people in that kind of lab environment, so you're actually get to interact with it. Now there's a number of sections obviously, but in our lecture classes we've got multiple sections. Like I mentioned before.
Baylee Snodgrass
03:21:20 PM
Edwin, I would assume not considering you would not be on campus. As we progress and more information is available to us, we will know those details. This would be handled by Campus Living
So you're in a class with, you know, we aim between 70 and 100 students in a section. Some of those, some of those sections are actually smaller than that, but that's kind of where our aim is.
James Jerozal
03:21:34 PM
Are we free to go if we have school work to do?
Because because we are one of the bigger programs in the northeast that affords us.
Some things that, uh, like labs you know, affords us to be able to have a diversity of labs and other smaller places just to just aren't able to.
Together and support it affords us having a diverse set of student club options like I mentioned.
Yeah, so I. I think with some of the size there's certainly some advantages that come along with that.
Baylee Snodgrass
03:22:09 PM

A quick question about minors paired with Aerospace Engineering, so I don't know the full.
Liz Edman
03:24:28 PM
quick question: how much does honors college change the experience in aero? for someone who's waitlisted for honors, should that impact whether to go to UB?
Inventory of you be miners and others a lot, but at least in our Department the robotics one pairs well. I think the manufacturing one compare fairly well, but you could even I think there's a minor in, for instance, electrical engineering that you could pick up, but I think the probably the the best paired one is maybe robotics.

03:25:02 PM

03:27:54 PM
What does the study abroad situation look like for SEAS students (disregarding the current situation)
You know the stats for our County in New York City or New York State online, and they're probably better than I can.
I don't know what else to say. We're kind of all in isolation, all healthy.
Andrew Fogelsonger
03:28:18 PM
Ebony, here is a good link for study abroad: http://www.buffalo.edu/studyabroad.html
Every good at your house, Andrew.
Yeah, everybody's good, we're just.
Just like everybody else, we're doing what we're asked to do. We're doing what we need to do to get through it and.
Eventually returned to, you know.
Ebony Cumbo Grant
03:28:35 PM
Thanks!
Late and you guys are right.
Yeah, thanks for asking, yeah.
There's a question about UBS reputation.
You know when we were talking about a Top 50 school in the nation and the top 30 public school in the nation? I mean, you're up there with with a lead company at that point. So yeah, it carries a very high reputation.
I guess if there there's there's schools that have.
I don't know a better reputation or a bigger name as you mentioned in the chat. Um, perhaps, but again, it's. It's that value. You know, the value of a degree versus what you're investing into it. Like I said, You're going to learn the same things at the undergrad level, basically anywhere, because we're accredited, we have to obey by the requirements set up by our accreditation body. Graduate School becomes a little different. You can Graduate School is late. Notice you can almost take whatever you want.
And really start getting specific about your courses. But undergrad, you're going to be taking the same classes here as you would anywhere else, so it's just about experience.
It's about a value, but the you be brand is is certainly nationally and internationally very, very well respected. and I hear that wherever I go.
Matt Syzdek
03:30:16 PM
Thank you.
Yeah, I would definitely say it's got. It's got a good name. I've never said I'm going to you be to anyone and then have no idea what I'm talking about. They're always either like Oh yeah, you be or they're like yeah, that's a great school nice so.
Yeah, something got a good name. I wouldn't say it's I would say it's up there.
Yeah yeah 30,000 over 30,000 alumni.
Uhm, I think I've got that number right, but we've got alumni all over the world I run into him everywhere. They're very proud of their degree and where they came from.
I'll talk about 30,000 and engineering alumni.
The school obviously has way more than that, but.
I'm just talking about engineering.
Alright, so, uh, I think with that.
Andrew Layton and I will.
Andrew Popovici

Yeah, we can leave it open if you still want to chat about things, but grateful you guys were on here. We do have any. You be pilots, a student club.
They have a flying simulator flight simulator basically. So for for pilot training that was donated to us by a major aerospace company.
Uhm, it's just a hauling upstairs from me, so we do have the you be pilots club here. That was the last question that came in. So again, email us anytime.
