Oh, you do Oh my God, look at this morning.
I have a Clock that doesn't work, so.
My my head covers it so it's OK.
You'll be great. This is your your a good. This is new.
Not not many things to do here. Yeah, just.
Now you'll be great. They seriously would. They like just Watt human interaction. I think from you be like they don't even care like what the content is, what you could sit there and tell them your life story and they would be like.
Yeah, I know it's so weird.
So at the end I can export the whole chat and send it to you. So it's like someone a mask something very specific. We could say like, please email you know Doctor Bartelo at K Bartell, but at the end if you wanted to reach out to them, you could.
Is your son home with you Kathy?
Oh, he was a senior, you be.
All that is so sad. I'm like devastated for seniors I I feel so horrible.
Yeah, oh, that's horrible. I I just my heart like brakes for them. I can't even imagine high school and college. I just it's so sad.
I know, I know, but like to just leave your friends all of a sudden like a poof, your gone.
Oh God, your hand corner? Is it the Cornell Taekwon?
Wow, OK he was physics. Is that what he was before? Yeah.
Cast this is really push the boat out here. Maybe they cost us is the chair.
Will see and hear you all. Spruced up to wow.
We all took five minutes to spruce today.
Wow, my gosh I don't know what to say.
Absolutely absolutely were not crossing any boundaries here are we?
So I mean we do need 15 minutes of prep time. We're good to go, right?
When we when Kathy takes over control, I'm guessing we can just turn our video off an.
Alright Jennifer, I think will get off.
Yeah, you don't need Maine.
Yeah, I I know what you're talking about, I mean.
Which which one do you like? This one or or this?
Dot Webex session for the whole Department with the faculty, staff and students. and I was doing slide show.
You don't, you're not seeing anyone at all. You're just seeing your slides and you're talking and you kind of relying on the fact that people are taking in what you're saying and that it's of some value. But without feedback you have this doubt it.
But for bandwidth played, I'm gonna get off and I'll also mute my microphone when I'm not talking.
I'll just say a few words of welcome.
No, I think you should do that. Kathy, that's your show and then the the one question is how we're going to manage the chat.
I'm going to be in the chat an I asked Katie in my office to come in and do it as well. Uhm, so she's gonna come in and help with it too.
So what will you do? You'll look at the questions that are coming in and then your thoughts A at some point. They've been a number of questions about this issue with you.
Yeah, so I usually keep like notes on like the top questions. Uhm, otherwise like individual questions or the questions we get all the time about like normal admission stuff will just answer them in there. But I'll keep notes on the eat and stuff and then at the end I'll pop in and I'll ask the questions.
So that I guess there should be a natural order here in the you know Kostas and I probably stay out unless it's some the academic question right?
And then we leave it. Kathy can handle everything associated with departmental management of graduate students. And then Jennifer, you'll take care of anything related to admissions.
Alright, sounds good, very good. I have a crazy dog who hopefully.
He he may interject at some point, that's another reason to keep the the microphone mute when I'm not talking. Cousin reacts to everything going past the house.
What, what, what, oh the one with with COVID-19?
Mom, as far as I know, she's she's she's doing well. I mean, I've spoken with the neighbor through their kitchen window, you know, offered to get stuck in womans and so on.
That well, she's a midwife, so she's got medical training. She picked it up in the hospital. Ann, their two daughters work for the CDC.
So one of them is come back from Atlanta and he's kind of taking care of her in the dad, but I didn't OK.
Remarkable range of reactions to this virus, it seems.
Well, I I. I mean, I'm not never demonologist so I won't claim to to to know but.
Wow, you got isn't always the best, uh, indicate right?
I sometimes we expect for something. There's a reason why we have experts. You know more gut feelings.
Yeah, she's doing well by the sound of things.
I'm just going to say it, Jennifer. She picked it up in the hospital, so whatever you do, don't go to hospital at the moment.
Yeah, I'm not trying to go anywhere, that's for sure.
John, how about your wife? She works in hospital, right?
She don't work in the hospital she works in a medical office for you BMD an strictly speaking coronavirus patients are not supposed to go there.
Because the sequence is there supposed to call the primary care physician which is that office and then the primary care physician I believe says you need to contact Erie County health services they do a test and then I think they tell you at that point you're on your own until you start to feel bad call an ambulance at that point and go the hospital so they are kind of cut out from seeing those patients in principle but she's out everyday.
And she's coming across people and we don't know how many cases there are in the community or who knows.
But you know you need you you need your sensual workers to work so.
Did you see the countdown at the top?
It says 53 seconds, so in 52 seconds it's going to open up right above our videos. You should see a countdown events scheduled to start, so when it gets to zero you'll see the participant numbers going to fly up.
Uhm, and then you can start in like 30 seconds. You can you know, say hello, uhm, but once it hits zero you'll notice like you're participant numbers. Probably going to fly up to like 150 very quickly.
Uhm, yeah, what you do it? Why don't you do it first Kathy? This is really about.
I'm gonna pop out, but I'll be back at the end and I'll be here if you need anything.
So you're just stopping. I think she just stopped broadcasting right now. Here we go.
So number of participants is supposed to quickly accelerate. Oh there it goes. Yeah 34.
Maybe we just keep watching that number until it stabilizes.

So if you think about the PhD program and they're out to be is the is the slide that says. I will start with something that happened very recently at it's called the PhD excellence program. It's a or initiative of UV. It's a University wide policy which tries. That's as the name suggest to strengthen our PhD program and to produce high quality in a PHD's and doctors.
So, among those policies, one with, I think it's crucial to you is that the newcomers to the PhD program will be funded for one year from our Department through a teaching assistantship. So this one here will allow you in this family will allow you to find a PhD I PhD advisor so that you can continue your PhD studies together with your advisor. Then you will. You will go through the what we call the PhD.
Ashish Nair
10:17:26 AM
Since the Consulate offices in India are closed till further notice, and the Visa will not be obtained in time, what do you suggest that we should do ?
Qualifying presentation, which is a a research topic focused presentation. We believe that this will serve as the basis for your PhD research topic and you can advance and that you can build around that or not so.
Jennifer Gammell
10:17:56 AM
Ashish - we are continuing to monitor the situation
Akshay Chandrashekar Raikar
10:18:03 AM
Will be the ppt shared after this session?
After that, uh, just to go on without pH D, you will be able to apply for to candid and see as we call it the 88 EZ form. This is this can be filed bye bye you the PhD student. After completion of the qualifying exam of course and you will file that with the Graduate School. The next stage will be your proposal defense. That is one step just before your graduation and your defense and then you are off to go. You are.
Well qualified, highly qualified doctors able to do research in the industry or in the academia.
Jennifer Gammell
10:18:20 AM
we suggest that if you do not receive your I20 and can not get a visa appt by July 1, that you defer to Spring 2021
Katie Lengel
10:18:33 AM
Yes, you will be provided the webinar afterwards
Jennifer Gammell
10:18:34 AM
we will continue to communicate with you on your options for Fall 2020
Md Hadiul Islam
10:18:43 AM
Can you tell us the RA/TA prospects for incoming Masters students?
Yeah, now uh, we try to to guarantee the highest quality of outcome from PhD program. We as the Department we closely monitor PhD students and by that we mean that we monitor your GPA. We monitor whether you have incomplete or resign courses and also we monitor your progress in coursework and this is done through a very personal and human interaction that way.
And, Uh, Doctor Kathy Bartella takes care of that really well so.
Uh, we also monitor the progress in preparing for the qualifying presentation.
Jennifer Gammell
10:19:13 AM
the University at Buffalo has not made a decision regarding Fall 2020, but we are committed to delivering you your education as best we can
We we go through uh, uh we watch over you through the advisors supervision for the proposal and defense in the final defense.
Jennifer Gammell
10:19:23 AM
we are hoping to be on campus for classes in fall 2020
And of course, all of the committee members of your PhD comedy will monitor your progress in the research. Now with regards to fight financial aid, let me say a few things that.
I will try to be very supportive. I mean our goal is our goal is your success as as a PhD student at that as a researcher? I mean you will be representatives of AUB. So we we wish for your highest success in resets. And we do that one of the key ingredients to that is the financial aid. And this is done as I previously talk through the PhD excellence program. We offer research or system zip.
Varun Harishchandra Desai
10:20:00 AM
If situation would not get back to their path, are you guys suggest for online classes or defer to spring 2021 intake?
Jennifer Gammell
10:20:33 AM
Varun - since we are not sure what the situation will be for Fall 2020 we are unable to answer that right now. We hope to be able to soon.
RA is we call it through advisors funding and also teaching assistantship. Now, with regard to that istic assistance, in order to be able to to teach in, to perform to guide undergraduate or ever graduate students, you will have to pass what we call the speak this year, which is a test whether you are proficient in the English language that you you, you can deliver some research related materials with course. Of course there are plenty of opportunities for treason scores if we have plenty of that, and there are.
Plenty other of opportunities for you to be involved in research project through the campus through internships. And of course there are other also opportunities through on campus jobs.
I think I can, uh, pass the state now to Kathy. This is what I had to say. I guess at this point, so let me mute myself and.
OK, my back here. Thank you very much.
You did it. You told them all about the evaluation. Alright, you did financially. Oh my goodness. Well guess what folks?
Varun Harishchandra Desai
10:21:21 AM

So one of the questions is about internship opportunities. Students, yes.
Zaid Khan
10:24:12 AM
Is it possible to intern in the first semester?
Varun Harishchandra Desai
10:24:21 AM
i think it would be better for you set up another webinar for us.
Again the internships, uhm, we we as the electrical engineering Department do not have.
Internships as part of your program and do not misconstrue what I just said.
Internships do not count.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
10:24:35 AM
Hello Hadiul.. did you get the what's app link?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:24:37 AM
Who exactly are supposed to give are SPEAK test?
With credit tored your program.
At least 75% of our master students.
We have two major career fairs, one in the fall, one in the spring. Companies are always looking for interns in Buffalo and around the entire United States.
You are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week.
When you are in school during the semester, add an internship, paid or volunteer, whichever yours is.
Md Hadiul Islam
10:25:18 AM
Yes I did Venkata, I will join after the session is over. Is that a group consisting of only iOt students?
In during the winter break and during the summer time, you are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week.
On any internship that you get.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
10:25:32 AM
Yeah
Is that a little more clear and that falls under that curricular practical training?
That I was talking about.
Christopher Tabacjar
10:25:38 AM
Hello, I came from an ME background with limited programming experience. What programming languages should I focus on to prepare for this program? Any UB resources I could use?
Kathy, can they start from the first semester?
No, I'm not. If you're an international student.
Uhm, you have to wait till your second semester.
And that just makes sense, there's.
Md Hadiul Islam
10:25:56 AM
Thanks Mate, will join soon enough
We know that you're coming a very, very long distance.
We also are aware that your schooling is not the same as it is here, and it does take. Trust me, it does take a full semester just to get used to the system to get used to your new lifestyle and to become accustomed to the things that are around you, language included.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:26:18 AM
Sir, would the faculties be open to hear our (as masters students) project proposals to be conducted as a funded and a guided research ?
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
10:26:19 AM
How about internships if we are joining in spring semester?
Manisha Nandkumar Phadke
10:26:21 AM
What are the most popular jobs and companies that MS-EE graduates are employed into?
Please, please trust us when we say.
It's not a great idea to do an internship the first semester, and that's why international admissions does not allow you to do that, however.
If you come on campus and say you work in the foods, you can work in the food service.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:26:43 AM
That is quite reasonable.
Part of campus. You can do that from the second you walk onto campus. You can work for a Department you can work at the bookstore.
That that's not what I consider an internship. That's work, and you may do that from the 2nd that you arrive on campus, but the intern ships per se. I cannot start till the 2nd semester.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:27:02 AM
Sir, would the faculties be open to hear our (as masters students) project proposals to be conducted as a funded and a guided research ?
Katie Lengel
10:27:08 AM
Regarding your specific, personal situations, you can email Dr. Bartelo
Goodnight, Kathy. Can I maybe just mention?
See any other ones you like there.
'cause again I do you have another question? Can you read me another one?

10:27:31 AM
how will the online courses work?
So, Uh, Kathy. Most of the people, uh, I think they ask about jobs, opportunities and can you talk a little bit about this CPT in the obd procedure?
OK, sure, absolutely so. The CPT is when you're actually in your program.
That's that would be during your program. The opete is after you graduate.
That's called optional practical training you apply through the International Scholar Services for an EAD card, and I'm trying to remember what EAD stands for, uhm?
Varun Harishchandra Desai
10:28:08 AM
can we get anyone of email id for query?
But I don't right now. So you apply for the card when you receive this card you then have.

10:28:11 AM
Apart from external internship opportunities, can we graduate students get opportunities to get employed as RAs or TAs on campus, especially if we might be interested in pursuing a PhD later on?
90 days to get a job and work in the United States.

Is UB resuming on-campus classes from Fall?
Permission and time to work in the United States.
An an I don't really feel I'm exaggerating when I say at least 97%.
Of the students that graduate, uhm find jobs in the United States?
Jennifer Gammell
10:28:52 AM
you can email kbartelo@buffalo.edu for curriculum questions
A few of them choose to go back home.
Companies all over the United States higher our students.
And many many end up staying and getting green cards.

10:29:14 AM
Sir, would the faculties be open to hear our (as masters students) project proposals to be conducted as a funded and a guided research ?
I hope that helps a little bit, I I can't go into too much detail about the actual laws right now, um.
With with this kovid virus, of course, here put yourself in this position. The students that actually graduated after the fall semester, February 1st was their graduation date officially?
To get a job in the United States, and it's very, very, very difficult for for for everybody here.
As I would assume in in in India as well, everything shut down, so nobody's going around hiring anybody.
Katie Lengel
10:29:59 AM
Shylesh - once you arrive on campus you can begin to explore connecting with faculty
Um, what we're doing right now to help people is giving them.
If we can a volunteer appointment to come and work with the professor on a volunteer basis, not paid, but that stops their Clock and.
Help, In other words, they then don't have to find that job within 90 days.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:30:22 AM
Thank you Ms. Katie
So there are ways around things that we can help as a University as best we can to help you be successful in to help you get a job after graduation.

Kathy, can I maybe add something here?
Jennifer Gammell
10:30:44 AM
No decision has been made about Fall 2020 classes at this time. We are hoping to have classes on campus. If we must do online courses we will let you know how that will happen.

Yeah, Kathy. John wants to say something, so let's let's wait a bit.

10:31:36 AM
Who exactly are supposed to give are SPEAK test?
So I just wanted to add to this, um, first of all, for those of you who are interested in finding more out about internships and Co op opportunities, opete and CPT, there's a pretty extensive description of that on the EE web page. If you go to the section that is relevant for graduate students, your find a subsection on internships and Co. Op. So I don't think that will be too difficult.
Jennifer Gammell
10:31:52 AM
Sumukh - those with a TA/RA offer must give the SPEAK test
Jennifer Gammell
10:32:03 AM
it would be in your admission letter.

10:32:16 AM
Here is the link that Dr. Bird just referenced: https://engineering.buffalo.edu/ee/grad/internships-experiential.html
Um two um find just want to talk a little bit about the the types of companies that we managed to place our students with very successful in placing students in technology companies across the entire US. This can be small startup companies. It can be major blue chip companies also, so companies like Google, Facebook.
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:32:21 AM
how we can apply for TA/RA
Intel, IBM um at the one end all the way down to small engineering firms here in Western New York. So we have a very good track record of placing students in women.
So I just wanted to add that extra statement to walk. Kathy had been, uh, uh mentioning. We may have to continue to negotiate through you copters.
At so I got it. Thank you John, for for adding that information to the discussion. But Kathy, some people are asking about TH ships and are a sips for Masters students. Can you clarify things a little bit here?
Absolutely so tieran rar offered only to PhD students.
Just the way that it is, uhm?
So unfortunately, our Department does not offer teaching assistantship or a research assistant to a master student, however.
I there are many and I I'm trying to come up with a number in my head this semester, this year how many we had but several.
And I would say at least Seven or eight of our Masters students that came in this year are continuing to PhD work.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:34:01 AM
Sir, what is the scope of inter departmental collaborative work within the University ? Say for example if my work requires resources or support from the department of chemistry......could we seek such support being from the department of EE?
Uhm, it's a natural progression. They get here. They love what they're doing. They decide to continue research, and at that time we offer you a teaching assistantship or a research assistantship.
But it at this point it's not a possibility for Masters students right now.
Kathy, can you also please give us some information about the speak test? What is exactly the speak test and who is supposed to take the test?
This speak test alright. This speak test is only for PhD students.
And only for PhD students that are going to be teaching assistance.
And the reason for this is if you're gonna be a teaching assistant, we really need to make sure that you know how to communicate.
Mohan Sahu
10:34:57 AM
can a masters student pursuing course based studies opt for PhD later on, if he/she shows interest?
With people with the English language and using the professional language that you know.
Did you need for engineering? Um, Master Students? You don't have to think at all about the speed test.
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:35:11 AM
can we take course cross specialization like Iot, communication ?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:35:11 AM
How/when/Where are we supposed to give the SPEAK test?
Until of course, you decide to continue for a PhD. Uhm, the speed test is given by the English language Institute here on campus. Uhm, you take it the first week that you're here.
And they give you a score, and if you are above a certain score then you are able to, um, teach a course.
Jonathan Bird
10:35:46 AM
Shylesh - UB is a very interdisciplinary environment with a lot of collaboration across delartments. However, if you are asking if another Department will fund you to work in EE I am afraid that is not likely. Was that you question?
Um we have, we do have teaching assistants right now that haven't hit the number. They need to hit and um that's fine. We use them is graters we use them as tutors uhm.
If you come in as a PhD student and you are assigned to be a teaching assistant, there will always be work for you.
I I guess I I don't consider the speak test to be.
Let's just say that, um, since I refresh my screen folks, um, I can actually see your chats. So I love this question of can we take course cross specialization?
Uh, such as communication. The answer to that is you may take up to two courses outside of the electrical engineering Department, however.
We have veto power as to what those courses are.
So can you take um music in The Beatles era? No, you may not.
Can you take a course in computer science? Yes you May.
Um, can you take psychology 700? No, you may not. However, you can take engineering and management.
So if you find a course it outside the electrical engineering Department that you would like to take.
Just come to me and ask me, is this appropriate?
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:37:15 AM
Yes Jonathan sir thank you. I was just asking if I could seek expertise from another department, of course not necessarily funds.
Can I? I may be out there. I wonder if.
Doctor Slovak ASI have something to add?
Dawn is talking first, so.
Jennifer Gammell
10:37:30 AM
QUESTION: I came from an ME background with limited programming experience. What programming languages should I focus on to prepare for this program? Any UB resources I could use?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:37:36 AM
But can we Audit classes? Like the Music and etc. that you mentioned?
And I wonder if Pratik is asking there the question about a crossbite specialization within electrical engineering. Even In other words, taking courses across the different areas within EE, like NRG systems comes the networking, electronics and photonics. If that is the question, then absolutely yes that is possible, right?
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:37:51 AM
great thanks..!
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:37:58 AM
both works for me
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
10:38:10 AM
How good is IOT specialisation in terms of job opportunities can you give an insight in to career fairs?
Um, I'm I'm. I'm sorry the question was short, so the full context of it. I'm not quite understanding, but I think between Kathy and I would probably we would probably cover that. I mean students within EE have a lot of freedom to choose the courses that they want to choose from EE curriculum.
I just coffee hasn't heard your question. Did you hear John or no?
I I can't hear doctor bird at all.
Yeah OK, let me let me repeat here so.
OK, thank you. Sorry about this folks.
It's like a game I was playing when I was a child. This is funny so so, uh?
Uday Gurudatt Vishvekar
10:38:36 AM
The embassy here is closed due to lockdown and we don't know exactly when it opens again so there's a chance of visa getting delayed. So getting for Fall 2020 might be a tough one for us. any solution to this problem?
R EE students allowed to take courses through the different programs like iot communications, energy systems. Are they allowed to do that cafe?
Well yeah, the the short answer is yes because.
Iot falls under electrical engineering your courses.
Our electrical engineering courses with with a few outside of the Department in computer science. Clean energy you you folks, all of your courses are electrical engineering with a few outside in maybe industrial engineering.
If you'd like to take something outside of the Electrical Engineering Department, you may take up to two courses. However, the electrical engineering Department has veto power.
Jennifer Gammell
10:39:31 AM
Uday - we do not have an update on Fall 2020 at this time, we will be sure to let you know ASAP
So as I said, psychology 101 is gonna get vetoed.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:39:43 AM
Sir, are there any University-Industry collaborative research or projects conducted within the university ?
But data analytics through computer science or wherever it maybe would not be so we do play it on a case by case basis.
Justice, ice, or a follow-up to that on the chat, which is can we audit classes? and I believe yes, the answer is they can order.
Oh, can I answer one thing or is Doctor Bird Talking?
Yeah, it said on talking, and John asks whether students can audit classes. Kathy.
Jennifer Gammell
10:40:06 AM
we ask that you wait until July 1 to defer your admission.
Students can audit classes. However, the term audit is very misleading.
Suhas Suryanarayanarao Vijayakumar
10:40:12 AM
Does doing a thesis always take 4 semesters to complete our master's degree?
If you would like to go sit in an learn about a class that's not auditing.
Mohan Sahu
10:40:19 AM
can a masters student pursuing course based studies opt for PhD later on, if he/she shows interest?
Audit means that you actually pay for the class.
But you don't necessarily get a grade for the class.
And students do go and sit in on other courses. Uh, you just need to speak directly to the professor and get permission.
In men in many of the electrical engineering professors they they are happy to have you gain more information.
So that that's never been a problem.
Alright, I have to plug my computer and hang on a second.
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:40:57 AM
is there any link where we can see the courses, if Yes can you please share it
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:41:10 AM
Sir, are there any University-Industry collaborative research or projects conducted within the university ?
And then there have been a lot of questions on the chat about what's happening in the pool. The visa situation. Um, maybe I can speak to that a little because I'm I'm in frequent meeting with the Dean of engineering and the other cares.

10:41:24 AM
How good is IOT specialisation in terms of job opportunities can you give an insight in to career fairs?
Got a little bit of insight into what's happening in the falls, so let me just say um, of course.
The critical problem at the moment is that we're dealing with the situation that no one in their lifetime.
Um, this pandemic is playing out in a manner that makes it very difficult to predict precisely where we will be from three months from now. We are very much aware, however, that for example, the embassies and consular offices in India say are currently closed and not accepting appointment with.
Mohan Sahu
10:42:28 AM
we can't hear Dr Bird
Leaders and So what? We're very much focused on at the moment, is that ensuring that come the fall whatever the global situation, maybe we are committed to providing you with a une compromised educational experience. Whatever the format of that experience may be, obviously the ideal situation would be that.

You will banish to get your visa is an come to you be uh in in, in in time to start the fall semester and the fall semester proceeds Justin normal fashion with students in classrooms interacting with professors. Who knows if that will be possible or not. One thing I would mention is if it's not going to be possible for you, be.
Zaid Khan
10:43:12 AM
Do US nationals outside the US need to attend on-campus classes this fall?
It's not going to be possible for other universities within the US. We're not talking here about a situation that is affecting our universally our universe, the only it's one that will be impacting all universities across US and likely across the world. So if for some reason we are unable to resume normal operation come the fall, what we are ready to do is to deliver classes to you in an online.
Jennifer Gammell
10:43:37 AM

Format so that you can initiate your graduate study without delay. Uhm, and then join us at a time, uh, where conditions allow you to do so? Jennifer Gammell
10:44:43 AM
hmm i'm sorry for the technical difficulties.
Um, I'm we've now gone to a situation where we were offering a originally at the beginning of the semester, something like 15% of classes online to one where we are now, basically administering all content online, including labs. We put mechanisms in place for lab experiences to basically be administered through remote learning, so hopefully what I've just explained is.
Jennifer Gammell
10:45:15 AM
We will share the presentation after the webinar
Going to be of some reassurance to you. To summarize, there's a lot of uncertainty about the coming months, but we're very actively planning at the University. Our strategy for responding to changing circumstances, and that we believe we can react to any situation that arises and ensure at the same time that your education goes on unimpeded. Maybe finally, I can.

10:45:20 AM
it will also be posted online.

The University of Buffalo is part of the State University of New York system, as I'm sure you all know, and many of you will have been hearing global news about the situation with the Corona virus outbreak in NYC, which has been the worst hit city in the United States. One thing I would like to emphasize is that here in Buffalo we've had.
I want to use the word mild, but the nature of the pandemic outbreak here has been far, far less severe than in NYC, so those of you who might have concerns about coming to Buffalo because of what you've heard going on in NYC, I would just like to emphasize that the situation here is very different for that NYC.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:46:22 AM

Uhm, so I'm trying to read very small text hear from Rick weaker, and I apologize if I pronounce your name incorrectly. I hope you'll be forgiving, but the question here is we've applied for the full 2020 session in case we aren't able to complete the visa procedures. Is it possible to shift to the spring session and my answer would be that.
Md Hadiul Islam
10:47:37 AM
Can you tell me the total no. of students admitted into the Engineering Sciences (iOt) program?
The nature of our programs is that we can handle fall or spring submission, right?

No so gassy. One of the questions is, uh, uh with regards to this situation about call with 19 and the visas and the closed consulats and other stuff. People that wouldn't be able to get the visas in time for the fall semester.
Will they be able to sift the their studies to the spring semester is not possible.
Abhyudaya Rathore
10:48:20 AM

10:48:24 AM
Does doing a thesis mandatorily takes 4 semesters to complete our master's program?
We absolutely can do that but please know also that we're looking into other ways as a Department.
So that you don't lose that semester.
We are in process right now of putting courses on line professionally on line.
If we can do this and I really really feel that we can because we are professors are on board and they're working very very hard?
That we will put the courses up on line and it you may take them from your home for the first semester and then come to the University in the spring that way you don't miss the whole first fall semester.
That's my my best in my favorite option if you feel that you want to defer your admission to spring absolutely possible that's up to you and you can you can start in the spring that's not a problem.
Kathy, going back to the studies question there, there is some people are wondering about master's thesis. How many semesters do they need to take for that, and is there any other option apart from master thesis will how, how? How do we deal with this stuff?
There's all course option for masters and then there is a thesis option with your Masters.
The All course option is 10 courses and then you do a culminating class.
Jonathan Bird
10:50:11 AM
Shylesh - many faculty collaborate with industrial partners so there are many opportunities of this kind
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:50:14 AM
My Personal opinion: I would prefer physical presence at the university than online courses. So I guess starting at spring is better if nothing works out for Fall 2020.
Your master, if you choose to do the Masters thesis, you take 8 courses.
And then that last 6 credits.
Is for your Masters thesis.
Now, the majority of folks cannot write a master's thesis and one semester, nor should you try.
Zaid Khan
10:50:34 AM
Since we can not internship in the first semester anyway, it would be better to take first semester online.
So then you will be here for a total of four semesters and you will graduate with 31 graduate credits.
Seven of those are thesis credits.
Kyle Mancuso
10:50:45 AM
Do research credits count for the all course?
Jonathan Bird
10:50:45 AM
I understand your feeling Shylesh, we will work with you to satisfy your needs
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:50:54 AM
Thank you Jonathan sir for the clarification on Univ-Industry collaboration..
Realistically is 4 semesters.
Suhas Suryanarayanarao Vijayakumar
10:51:01 AM
Thanks for the clarification Dr. Bartelo
Um, do research credit cards. No research credits do not.
Don't count for the all course option, no.
What we have though, and that's a very good point. Who said that Kyle?
Mohan Sahu
10:51:15 AM
starting masters in spring, it isn't beneficial for international students. is that true?
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:51:20 AM
Thank you Sir
We do have horse called individual problems.
And you may take up to 6 credits of individual problems.
This is a research course that you put together with a professor about something that you would like to learn about.
This does count as a course for Masters students.
And you like as I said, you may take up to 6 credits of individual problems, which would count as two courses.
Kyle Mancuso
10:51:53 AM
Very cool! Thank you!
10 course or 8 cores degree.
Very cool. Alright sure Kyle.
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:52:02 AM
if the course goes online for 1st semester by chance, then the classes will be live sessions or recorded one
What else am I reading here?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:52:03 AM
How much CPT can we do in total?
Where there was an important question.
Sai Venkata Pavan Santosh Kumar Kottamasu
10:52:16 AM
Hi everyone, in case if we take online classes for fall 2020, are we eligible for CPT? I heard that we need to study inside the US to get eligible for CPT. I am sorry if my information is wrong.
Yeah, it isn't better. Um, no you can. Who is this a Moja Moja? It it does not matter at all if you start your degree in the spring or in the fall.
If you are an electrical engineering student Masters the Iot program, it is best to start in the fall.
Jean De Dieu Niyomugabo
10:52:41 AM
Good Morning Everybody: I have a few questions: Is it possible to complete this program part-time, Since this pandemic is shuffling things around, would that be possible to choose the start semester of my program other than this fall.
Jennifer Gammell
10:52:44 AM
You must be ON CAMPUS for 2 semesters to be eligible for CPT
Because that culminating experience that EE 701 currently is only offered in the fall semester. Do you come and you do your fall semester, your spring semester and then you do your culminating experience in the fall semester as an iot Masters of Science and engineering?
Masters of Science in electrical engineering or.
Nanophotonics clean energy. You can start any semester you want because EE 616 that culminating course is offered in the fall and the spring.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
10:53:08 AM
How good is IOT specialisation in terms of job opportunities
So OK, I'm I'm sorry folks. I'm just trying to read a little bit on the side here. Um, if the course goes on line for first semester by chance, then the classes will be live sessions or recorded ones.
Hey, that's a great question. Uhm?
Zaid Khan
10:53:23 AM
Do you guys have preliminary exam? If yes, when is it?
Some might be live, so maybe recorded, uhm?
I don't know jeffy. Yeah, do you know?
John wants to to say something about them.
Oh, John wants to talk about that, OK?
Yeah so there there's been a lot of discussion uh within the University administration at the moment about how to approach fall again so this is picking up from the discussion a few minutes ago.
Mohan Sahu
10:54:18 AM
Where all MS in EE students get employed, those who would specialise in energy systems
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:54:24 AM
I have already done 6 months of CPT in my Master's so do I get 12 new months for the PhD or is it the same 12 months that I have to use for MS and PhD together?
This discussion of a hybrid model in which we offer classes both to seated students and also record those classes live uhm so that students who need to take them in an online or distance learning environment are able to do so later on to be perfectly honest with you.
Jennifer Gammell
10:54:50 AM
Sumukh - i believe your CPT starts over with a new degree
The details of that will become clearer in the coming weeks this is again it's a rapidly changing situation in the last few weeks we've just been focused on managing the situation with the current semester but now that we've achieved some stability with the operation of this semester we're turning our attention now more seriously to the issue of how we manage the fall.
Jennifer Gammell
10:55:00 AM
I would email isss@buffalo.edu with that question
So it's it's it's very possible that we will be operating in a hybrid format UM where you can either follow the class live and participate essentially in the class from a remote environment.
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:55:18 AM
continuing with that question about IP credits?
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
10:55:23 AM
ok great, Thanks
But given that the time zone difference may not make that viable we will also make classes available the recordings of the classes available on an online platform.
That's where we are that's all I have at this time.
Jean De Dieu Niyomugabo
10:55:37 AM
Is there any plan to offer courses in electrical machines and control systems?
OK, there's also a question from Mojan, maybe I can answer that cost us.

10:56:05 AM
Regarding COVID_19 situation, is it possible that we start our study online but arrive one to two weeks later to continue our education on-campus?
He's asking where a Ms students in a electrical engineering get employed especially those who work in any who specialize in enerji systems so students who specialize in enerji sistem many of them go on to work for the power utility companies National Grid is the utility company that is here in the Buffalo area in the Western New York area and we have extremely strong connections.
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
10:56:48 AM
Can I be a part of 2 research groups? I am already part of a group who is going to be my PhD advisor, With that can I also do research with someone else simultaneously?
Katie Lengel
10:57:03 AM
Once the University has made an official decision about Fall 2020 we will notify all students.
Uh 2 uh that uh a company to that um enerji a distributor so many many of our alumni uh are actually employed in upper level management positions within that company similarly those students can go on to find jobs in with NRG distribute distribution companies.
Katie Lengel
10:57:15 AM
It will also be posted to our engineering website.
Shylesh Srinivasan
10:57:18 AM
Thanks a lot for this session Sir and Ma'am. I have a better perspective now.
Across uh the US and then In addition to that you know they may go into smaller startup companies smaller scale engineering firms that are present here in the Western New York area or in New York state New York State is one of the.
Say within the US as being one of the more leading states in terms of driving the development of clean energy, and so there are many opportunities for employment in the clean energy sector in different aspects of the clean energy sector within within New York State also.
Ishita Dhopeshwar

There's another excellent question. If I jump in cost us.
Suhas Suryanarayanarao Vijayakumar
10:58:51 AM
Can you please talk about job prospects for students specializing in communication and signal processing?
John is frozen at the moment.
I would love to hear some time what he had to say.
Yeah, we have to wait I guess yeah.
Ritwika Dey
10:59:23 AM
Thank you very much for the explanation
Prashant Kumar Jha
10:59:26 AM
Let’s join this telegram group I created to stay in touch https://t.me/ubfall2020 after the webinar
Uh another question in the mean time until he unfreezing let me do that um the MC you would like to know how much CPT can we do in total uhm you can do a second semester CPT you can have a CPT that summer you can do a CPT.
John is not, still is still not with us so.
He is having technical difficulties is any uhm then in the mean time.
In the mean time, uhm, let me see if I can answer other thing.
I think it I think is refreshing now.
Good, maybe I'll be able to see him.
Folks, this is how it is it EE.
Jennifer Gammell
11:00:16 AM
sorry everyone for the technical difficulties!
And we keep a sense of humor.
Uhm yeah, I I'm. I'm really trying to read the checks to see if there's anything else I can answer while we wait for doctor bird to get back here.
Also, going through the questions here.
Pratik Jivan Dahibhate
11:00:39 AM
in the course list there are some Special course and some starting with EE title can you please explain the difference please
Mohan Sahu
11:00:48 AM
on campus opportunities, can you explain again?
Um Zaide, I don't know if you're still with us. Um, your question, since we cannot internship in the first semester anyway, would it be better to take the first semester on line?
I want I want answer your question, I'm just.
Akash Kumar Sinha
11:01:00 AM
Recession on internship opportunities ??
I have to think about that. No, here's my. Here's my whole feeling.
Everything can be done on line and it can be done well.
I'll let you all in on the secret I don't come from an electrical engineering background my background is in education.
In in education we love people we are touchy feely huggy people.
And I think from an engineering standpoint the more that you can actually use your hands.
Zaid Khan
11:01:38 AM
Is there a difference between tuition fee of online vs. on-campus courses?
Get into things, get in the clean room, get into the labs.
The better it is for you, can it be done all on line? It sure can. And again, this is a personal opinion.
Did not the opinion of the entire Department I'm sure?
It I feel it tends to be a better learning experience.
Shylesh Srinivasan
11:02:18 AM
Please not online labs haha ! We need to touch stuff and see capacitors blast off : )
So answering your question, the way that I see it, is it better to take your first semester on line if you have a choice between coming to the University and being in the culture and being with other people and talking directly to professors versus doing it on line?
If I were you, I would come and be part of the whole.
That that is how I would answer that.
But again, that's a lot of personal.
Feelings coming in there.
Um, do do do see what else we can find here.
No, my my laptop run out of juice, I apologize.
But we cannot. We cannot hear him. Yeah, it's like.
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
11:03:13 AM
There's a lot more than capacitors to play within EE !! exciting stuff!
I don't know people when you come to the University, you definitely hear doctor bird. If you walk in the hallway so.
Jonathan Bird
11:03:20 AM
My laptop died
Are there any other questions that people want to put on the chat that I could hopefully try to answer?
Jonathan Bird

I already asked questions
Katie Lengel
11:04:09 AM
You want to be sure the method of instruction you select, online vs on ground, does not jeopardize your eligibility for OPT or CPT.
Wait, there are there are a lot of questions flowing in so.
Mohan Sahu
11:04:26 AM

International Student Services will be hosting a webinar on 4/22/20
I see some people are confused about these special courses in the Gen EE cor, so I think Kathy they they need you to clarify. Once again, the difference between the specializations in the general course.
Oh gases frozen now I see.
Hang on OK and my back alright? I thought I would refresh and see if I could get a couple more questions to come my way. Alright, Um.
Let you know what guys let me go back to the power point.
An I can show you, uhm, that way.
With regards to the different uhm, Masters Alright.
A Masters in Electrical Engineering Graduate Studies.
Jonathan Bird
11:05:35 AM
Jean - Prof. Herrera in energy systems teaches controls for power machines
All right, that's a Masters in EE.
30 credit hours E portfolio.
There is also a Masters in Engineering Sciences.
Pawan Kumar
11:05:56 AM
Can an electrical student, can take courses from computer engineering (VLSI)?
Now this falls under the Electrical Engineering Department, but it is different from a Masters in Electrical Engineering.
Md Hadiul Islam
11:06:02 AM
What are the kind of research internship opportunities do Engineering Sciences students get under CPT from the second semester?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
11:06:03 AM
Can't hear Dr. Bird
The difference is the Masters in Electrical Engineering is a theory based degree.
Masters in engineering science.
The Internet of things. The Clean Energy, the nanophotonics. That's more an applied degree.
Rishabh Wangu
11:06:17 AM
can we still go for an internship in second semester if first semester is online ?(for an international student)
All right, uhm? But tell me again, that's just the Bacchus. What was the exact question? I want to make sure that I answer it.
Yeah, there's there seems to be some confusion about our our programs like.
Yeah, there there seems to be some confusion about our programs. Like you you you stated very well got that difference between our general EE degree and as those specializations. So if you have any more information about that I think that would be welcome.
Katie Lengel
11:06:48 AM
International Student Services can best advise on immigration requirements - please email them at isss@buffalo.edu
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
11:06:52 AM
What has more value msee or es specialization?
We are going to put the power point slides up on line. Each one of these, the Internet of things, the Masters and Green Enerji Oh Hi Doctor Berg, you're upside down.
Each one of these has a link to go with it and which I'll explain to you the entire program. If you have additional questions, please please email me.
Jean De Dieu Niyomugabo
11:07:18 AM
Thank you, Dr. Bird.
We could even zoom one on one and I could answer questions that way if you prefer.
A lot what has more value MSE E or ES specialization?
Do you mean value in the workforce? Because if you mean value in the workforce, that depends on what you wanna do, um?
We need electrical engineers.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
11:07:56 AM
In terms of career and job opportunities.
Jonathan Bird
11:08:01 AM
Pagan - yes, you can take VLSI classes in CSE
Electrical engineering let me tell you this folks, I've heard this from everyone I work with this faculty, and I believe it to be true. Electrical Engineering is the base to all other engineering. The basic chemical. It's the based industrial. It's the base to mechanical.
As an electrical engineer Masters student, you get a broad base of everything.
And that's what you need to go out into the workforce.
Suhas Suryanarayanarao Vijayakumar
11:08:17 AM
Can you please talk about job prospects for students specializing in communication and signal processing?
Md Hadiul Islam
11:08:24 AM
Hey Katie , could you please mail the presentation for international students from the webinar that was conducted for us a few days back?
That having been said, if you really love the idea of the Internet of things, if that's really what turns you on, then you do this. Masters in Engineering Sciences and you go out and you get a job doing that. If you love Green Energy and you want to save the planet and you love windenergie knew love solar Enerji and you want to contribute to that and you wanna make this planet a better cleaner place.
Then that's the direction that you go.
Jonathan Bird
11:08:52 AM
Venkata - I would personally recommend the MS in EE as it has more “brand recognition”
Find your passion. That's what you need to do.
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
11:09:00 AM
Can I be a part of 2 research groups? I am already part of a group who is going to be my PhD advisor, With that can I also do research with someone else simultaneously?

can we still go for an internship in second semester if first semester is online ?(for an international student)
Md Hadiul Islam
11:09:39 AM
What are the kind of research internship opportunities do Engineering Sciences students get under CPT from the second semester?
Yeah, yeah, actually I was typing in an answer, but it's it's a It's good it would be marked sorted to give an answer just a just now. So actually opportunities job opportunities are plenty. I mean, you can go either to pure communications companies like Qualcomm, Broadcom and the companies like that, but recently.
The the agenda has been a has been richer with the addition of the data science component into comes, so we also tied's machine learning classes in data science classes here in EE, which gives you the extra strength of adding that data science component into your into your CV to be able to pursue job opportunities in companies like Google, Facebook and so on.
So I think nowadays the the opportunities I mean the things look good in the sense of.
Katie Lengel
11:10:25 AM
Rishabh - International student eligibility can be addressed to isss@buffalo.edu
There are so many things you can choose from, especially in the nowadays marketing 9 US.
So in short, yeah, prospects look, look good and things are promising.
Jonathan Bird
11:10:39 AM
Sunukh - If you are a paid RA on a project then that is your primary full-time research responsibility. However, many faculty collaborate across campus so it is likely that you will be working with servers groups in practice
Ishita Dhopeshwar
11:10:44 AM
can you give us an overview on the curriculum that we can expect in the first semester?
Oh, I see, Doctor Bird is typing away here.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
11:10:52 AM
Thank you Jonathan Bird for the suggestion. At the same time it's disappointing as I have applied to ES and got admit.

Rishabh Wangu
11:11:03 AM
Thank you Katie for answering
Md Hadiul Islam
11:11:06 AM
What are the kind of research internship opportunities do Engineering Sciences students get under CPT from the second semester?
We yes iPod, I absolutely can. But you've got a lot of variables there. First of all, what degree program do you want to be in?
Secondly, what are your interests?
Jonathan Bird
11:11:26 AM
I see, well contact us afterwards and we will work with you
And Thirdly it that I would love to answer you on a very individual basis for that so it. Why don't you email me that question? KB ARTELO at buffalo.edu and I can go through everything with you and you. We can sit down together and do it OK?
Sumukh Prashant Bhanushali
11:11:43 AM
Thank you Dr. Bird.
Jonathan Bird
11:11:44 AM
we want you to be happy with your investment in education
What kind of research internship opportunities do say OK, Uhm Mohammed, uh, what? What are the kind of research internship opportunities do engineering science students get from CPT? The absolute same that the Masters of electrical engineering get?

Ee dept
Would love you to come to venkata.
Please do please please try to get here.
Our participants are going down. They must be leaving us.
Do you think we need to leave? I can't tell 'cause Jen.
I don't know. I think Jennifer controls the buttons here so I don't know.
Well, I have no place to go.
Although I might go up to campus and water my plants today.
Yeah, I don't think anybody's done the Mail in a week or so, so I'll go up there and.
Venkata Sai Gireesh Chamarthi
11:18:13 AM
Is it true that class size for the IOT is single digit?
But at least the weather is good today.
That yeah, that's why I wanna go up there. Is it warm? How? How would you know you've been sitting here with me for two hours?
It looks nice. I mean, now that I'm all makeup and all pretty, you know, maybe I should go out and about.
Someone asks about the size of classes.
Oh, Is it true that the class size for the iot is single digit um for that culminating EE 701 class?
Not single digits. I think there's probably 1516 people in there that's the semester an they work very closely. They work in um.
So usually there's twelve 1416 in that class.
And that's a great thing.
Doctor Guan runs that course beautifully.
Suhas Suryanarayanarao Vijayakumar
11:19:24 AM
Is the whole batch of EE master students divided as per their specializations?
What else you get venkata at your full of questions? I love it.
Is the whole batch of EE master students divided as per their specializations?
Could you ask me that a different way? Because I don't, I don't see any of you is divided at all.
You're all in classes together. You all intermingle, uhm?
The only way the only reason your divided is for paperwork purposes.
Physically, you're not divided at all.
You're all in the same courses.
Does that help? Sue has did I answer that properly?
Yeah I think the answer is is fine yeah.
Yeah I think that most of the concerns are about the security job after this study so.
But honestly, I think it's a really great time because I think the US is just going to come back.
And I think they're gonna up industrialization. I think that the medical and hey, we need electrician, you know they're going to up everything.
I expect the boom next spring I guess.
I do as well. I think it's a perfect time to be.
We're still at 8. Eight people still want to see us.
I wonder, I wonder when Jenn will actually cut it of.-?
Yeah, I don't know about that.
You gotta be sitting here till 2:00 o'clock.
Yeah, Well you know me. I never really eat breakfast. I was talking to my girlfriend in South Carolina before this and she said you better eat you better eat. So I had two leftover Crescent rolls from Easter dinner.
I don't know how long it would go and did I show you that I got a Buffalo Love Cup. I showed you that.
Yes yes I saw that that's a good one.
I have to get an Electrical Engineering Cup. One of those 10 billion that are actually in the Department.
In case we do this again, I don't. I don't have it. You be mug.
They were giving out those like a few years ago to like many many just.
I've been in many wrong lines in my wife.
I miss the good mug line.
How were they understand?
Maybe OK, wait, hang on a second. Let me write to Jennifer Jennifer Uhm.
I mean the the participants are going down. It's only 7 now so.
Katharine Bartelo
11:23:24 AM
Jennifer, Should we stay on a little while or have you cut folks off?
When it be funny if she comes back and says I cut you off 20 minutes ago.
Will be here till night like.
She's not answering me. I don't even know she can see it.
But I do know I can see my emails coming in. The kids are emailing.
So I will spend a little time this afternoon answering those questions.
Thank you thanks, that's great.
Also I gotta send, say, by the way. Thank you, I I didn't read it but I saw it came in that that one student asked me about the computer languages.
I I don't. I don't know what the folks of like electronics they they use some special type of software, but it's not. It's not a language that on her language, they have to go math club.
Ice, TC, C++. These are basic stuff. They'll end up doing undergraduate and nowadays Python is very popular by some yeah.
Tonight I have to do that and I'm gonna send you.
When we get I should send to you now Daniels Eportfolio.
Is the most stunning I mean above and beyond stunning I have ever seen.
As soon as soon as we're done here alum, I've got the link over there. All the kids except one kid I lost and I don't understand 'cause I'm zang you wrote to me and said dumb I.
Oh, you did? Oh yeah, OK, I don't know. I emailed him again yesterday and I've got nothing I like I'm really afraid.
He's dropped off the planet. I don't know how to get him.
Annum, yeah, I'm I'm very concerned about him, but all the other kids.
All over it, they're doing great.
So you are saying these portfolios are better than last semesters.
Oh yeah, by far by far, because Jason and I figured out exactly the words to use so that they that they ticked alum what they need to do um in plus to see tomorrow tomorrow's the deadline. That's the day I gave him to be completely.
And I think for avamar done.
Let's just say the editing and the reflections. Because of the wording has to be a little bit better, but um were good.
We're good, I'm I'm. I had a schedule right now.
And I think there's Seven of AM.
How many students do you expect next semester is gonna be like 3040 fifty or what?
Um, for the fall will remember we had a very incoming small incoming class.
We only had 3536 come in.
Some of those were iot, so we won't have those, and if any of those kids decide to do with thesis again, I I think we're 1520.
Caps for the fall for that class.
Good good, that's good, yeah.
Yeah, and if I have to do it on line, it's all. It's all set up already.
Although you know I just love to be with him.
It's just it's I just miss him.
Jennifer is not answering.
No, I'm not getting the idea that she got that.
I, I guess now it's like a 1128 so we can leave at 11:30 is like 1 1/2 hours so.
That was our original time limit, right?
Yeah, I think that's what she said. She said it up for.
So alright, law got here uhm?
Do we need to talk about anything else? I'll send you this link for Daniels thing and then let me read through all the emails and then if we have to talk later.
I'm gonna go put my sweatshirt back on OK.
I'm gonna stay with a necktie, the holding.
Oh yeah, I think you should. All day long and go to dinner like that.
I'll do gardening with my nectar.
Take your walk around the neighborhood like that, would you please?
Alright, I'll talk to you later. See ya bye.
