Talk to you little bit about her season 16 professional development program.
Just checking that introduce myself right.
Oh, I can't hear you Chris.
Oh, it says I'm controlling too. I think we both can.
Yeah, if you want to start it or I can start at whatever. Whatever works for me, I can introduce this both and then.
OK Yeah 'cause I was thinking that maybe during the areas of training, if you uhm you know want to just provide a little more detail as I'm going through like the a competencies that could be that could be good, um?
Yes, yes, that would be fantastic.
Yeah, an actually. Lindsey and John are going to pop into um, and hopefully I mean the question will be about this, but I have a feeling a lot of questions will be about admissions as well. They're going to probably poppin. Uhm, so yeah, so they're all going to be in there. Just kind of trying to moderate that chat and kind of see. Are there questions to the right places then?
And I'm hoping that my blue screen of death doesn't come back.
Yeah, that Matt said this happened to his work mom thing and that's what happened.
I'm like this is not the time.
Since I started so I think I got it this summer after I started so 17.
No, not in 4 seconds from now, so fingers crossed all right. They're going to come in.

Welcome everyone! We are here to answer questions in the chat about the SEAS 360 program today. I'm joined by Lindsay and Lauren as well.
So what exactly is arcis 360 professional development program? This program is a free professional development program that's offered to all graduate students in the school of engineering and Applied Sciences. This program was developed as a result of a need that are Dean's Advisory Board has seen in graduate students leaving University and entering the workforce, and it was developed as a brainchild in cooperation with our former Dean lethal folks.

So they thought you know our Dean's Advisory Board. It's a compilation of our distinguished alumni as well as industry, industry leaders, and so they are, you know, in the front lines there are seeing our graduates as they come out the door, knowing that there technically sound but also understanding that they need to focus in a little bit more on what we talk about as power skills, those soft skills.
That students are lacking when they are getting into the workforce, so this program was designed to help are technically strong students develop these skills which employers are looking for for students coming right out of the gate.

Here at the University of Buffalo, and they have until the time that they complete their degree to finish the program. So throughout this opportunity, students need to complete 25 hours of training to obtain their certificate, and we offer a variety of options to do so. We have workshops, seminars on line programming.

Experiential learning offered throughout the not only calendar year, but the academic year as well. We schedule about 40 opportunities each semester, so we try to vary them on different days of the week. Times throughout the day as well. So depending on what your class and lab schedule you guys are students first. So obviously that comes first and foremost. An hour sessions are about an hour to an hour and a half in length, so very manageable that you can come participate.
Jennifer Gammell
09:04:13 AM
Guresh - yes this is free to all students
Jennifer Gammell
09:04:31 AM
You must opt in, and complete the training hours, but free of charge
And then continue on with your studies for the day and this. This program is a great resume builder when employers see some of the key skills that you're walking away with, and workshops that you've attended. This is a great resume builder an it's something that will definitely help you throughout your career, whether it be in academia or in the private sector.

Alright, so a little bit about now what this program focuses on the specific areas of training. What is nice? So we focus on the eight key competences that may switch is the National Association of colleges and employers. What they focus on, and so they say, there's eight key competences that broadly prepare graduates for a successful transition into the workplace. So what are the eight key areas that employers are looking for, not only from the technically sound students, but those soft skills?
That we've been talking about.
Jennifer Gammell
09:06:29 AM

People thinking and problem solving oral, written communications, teamwork and collaboration. So these first three they may seem, you know, easy that you know. I think critically I have to be able to write and speak and work with teams. This is something that sounds easy, but when it comes down to it actually takes a lot of work in a lot. A lot of thought here. Working within yes.

Just just a comment on the critical thinking problem solving and on each of these just some anecdotal evidence with regards to these it's important to think about critical thinking not only occurring in the classroom. But any problems that you're putting in place in the company or a job that you're working in for example, you may in your career or be provided a scenario where you have a conflict. You have to think through a very complex problem and you may have competing priorities for example, as an engineer.

Do you act insubordinate and go against what your supervisor is telling you, or do you take the path the correct path of getting the product out to industry and going through safety standards and checks? There's some. There's a fine line sometimes, and these are very difficult scenarios to be put in.

But you have to critically examine the situation that you're involved in and thinking through all aspects of a problem as opposed to quickly getting the answer before you actually think of the ramifications longer term. So that's one aspect of that, with oral and written communication. Is there a way that you can communicate your message very clearly to someone rather than writing a novel? I think we've all seen people who write emails that are very well detailed.

But it may take you a 12 months to read through the email and you have to look at every single point we are. We feel very strongly within the school of engineering and Applied Science. Is that not only are do we need to be detailed, but we need to be able to communicate error message in a very short period of time. One brief piece that's related to this is 3 minute thesis are at our University. There's a 3 minute thesis competition that takes place that really requires people to.

Take a very large amount of information in a short amount of time. Communicate their message to an audience that may have very little knowledge of who they are or what they're talking about. So these types of things are very important to employers, teamwork and collaboration. Another example, making sure you don't have a difficult if you do have a difficult person to work with, or you may be the difficult person. I know it's very easy to be the person that thinks that they know more than the rest of the team members, but.

Will UB be sending i20s in courier or electronically
There's a way of interacting with others and showing empathy and being able to work with others in a community based way. These are very important traits within a company. If they're looking to hire someone they don't necessarily want the smartest person that cannot communicate with others. Communication and teamwork is a very important aspect of what companies are looking to hire.
These are very important things that we need to think through in the career market job market.
Jennifer Gammell

Alright, thank you so much Chris, um, the uh, the next three to five digital technology. Most of our students are very technically sound in digital technology, but it's taking it to the next level. We have three specific sessions that really do focus primarily on digital technology that we have an industry leader comma in, you know, as an engineer, you are getting Humongous data sets that come in. How can you digest these data sets?

And make them, um, make that make your fellow employers and make the general population really understand this data in a simplified way. So we have several sessions that do focus on this leadership. This is a very this kind of ties in all of the competences, but it's something that's really important, Chris kind of touched upon this before about working in a team, not working on an island. There is a big difference between a manager and a liter.

So really, focusing on leadership, and we probably have. I want to say about 10 to 15 sessions that really hone in on the different aspects of leadership. Here. Mosta interjecting the point that you're trying to communicate to the audience. These are very important things to be keys to success for you in your professional career. Whether you're going into careers in academia or industry. Very important aspects of being able to make sure you're visualizing to support your argument, these are the types of skills that you learn in this particular area, and I like to coin this as medium skills. We talk about hard skills or the hard skills that you learn in the classroom. The technical skills.
Are soft skills or power skills? Are the interpersonal skills in dealing with other people and be able to work with others? Medium skills are that hybrid between what you're learning in the classroom and be able to communicate that to your audience at the softap skill level, so these skills are a bridge between your hard skills that you learn in a classroom in the actual ones that you're leveraging in working with other people in terms of leadership, I think that there's it's important to know that leadership doesn't necessarily mean the one that speaks the loudest.

It could also be understanding better about your own individual leadership style. There are some leaders that are thoughtful leaders that are more letting the group lead by consensus, and then interjecting when they need to to keep everybody moving in the same direction. So better identifying and understanding your own personal skill set to be successful in your professional career development is another important aspect of leadership, and then finally with professionalism and work work ethic.

Um the nonverbal communication can speak even louder than the verbal communication. For example, showing late, showing up late to meetings, showing up late, or not showing up at all when you register for something. These things communicate to your audience, for better or worse, the type of person that you may or may not be, and it's very important to be mindful of what you're communicating is impossible. If we were together looking at each other face to face right now.
Lauren Rothschild
09:14:55 AM
Teja - No minimum per semester
Adithya A
09:15:03 AM
are there any technical skill development programs apart from soft skill development like this ?
There's this exercise that we do where we have two people stand at the front of the room and stare at each other and they don't say anything even though they're not saying anything. They're communicating the nonverbal communication speaks very loudly and these are very important things to think about when you're working in a professional setting or you're working with other people, nonverbal can outweigh that verbal, and having people be mindful of that.
Thank you Chris and then our final two competencies that round out. The eight career management, an global, intercultural fluency.

Thank you Katie. I think it's very important with relation to career management to be introspective at the very beginning of your career as to the past that you choose, and being able to identify what your particular stranks knowledge and weaknesses maybe in an area in areas that you need to become stronger and relationship to career management and not just thinking about the job that you were in as a job, but thinking about how that job and even Graduate School is a means to an end for you. It's the vehicle to delivery deliver you too.

Where you want to be and not thinking about it in isolation. Sitting in a lab or being in a course thinking about anything that you can do to make yourself more well rounded. To be able to land the job and career that you want, and being mindful of the planning, the career planning that takes place with that. Am I strong enough? And those other areas that I want to be able to enter and thinking about it holistically as far as global and intercultural fluency, it is no surprise in today's economy. It's a global market and its strength and diversity and the ability for us to work with those who are different than us to provide an overall better quality product. And it's very important that when we're working in a global economy to be respectful and mindful of those who are different than us.

And this is valued as a strength within companies. An it is not an easy skill in some cases to understand, especially when dealing with people who are different than us, especially if we've not been exposed. Vinit - we'll address that shortly!
These competencies are relatable to each of their specific areas. Just recently we had one of our bio medical engineering alumni come in to talk about career development. He was one of our more recent alumni from the past five years. So really, what? What kickstarted him? What he took away, what he learned it you be, and how he got to where he is in his career. We have civil engineering alumni that have come in computer science ones.

We do have several annual events that are CS 360, does host each year. The first one that I'm sure if you guys have participated in some of our other webinars have heard Chris speak about the first one is our new graduate student professionalism, orientation, an networking reception. This happens to kick-off the beginning of the fall semester. Typically it's at the end of August and it's a wonderful afternoon that welcomes are entering graduate students.

And it provides a critical training beyond the classroom to help better prepare you for the for what's to come. And so we have sessions that are led by industry professionals, academic faculty, University senior leadership. An alumni. We have our office of academic integrity. There we have Blackstone Launchpad, which provides opportunities for those of you that are looking to participate in startups and to be your own entrepreneur.

Our next event that we host annually is called our career perspectives in networking conference. This event currently is held each fall. It has been held in the spring in previous years though as well, but we offer an opportunity for all of our school of engineering graduate students to meet and network again with industry professionals. Receive resume and CV writing feedback. Have free LinkedIn professional photo taken. Some things that we're really proud of. This event has evolved over the past four.

So if you want to check our upcoming webinars, this is a great one to tune into with had our border who is the director of that program, we also have a distinguished speakers panel of industry leaders, so it's a great question and answer session. Last year we did have several of our engineering partners as well as our alumni on this panel and then this cap, soft with a networking reception. So those soft skills that we're talking about. This is not a job fair. However, there is a job fair, typically.

This program is usually offered in-person sessions
And our third annual event that we do host every years or graduate student poster competition on this is an opportunity for students throughout the school to network again. Working on those soft skills, talking skills present their work to a variety of audiences and become more familiar with research work being performed in other areas of engineering. Typically, each Department nominates two to three posters from their respective departments to be included in this event.
Uh, which represents the best work of students across the school. The posters are then judged by CS faculty, including directors of graduate studies, chairs of the Department and other staff, and there are awards that are presented to the top three students with the top of recipients moving forward to the University wide poster competition.

So that's just a quick snapshot of three of our major events that we hold throughout the year. And again, these are listed on our website undergraduate student events, so you can click there and see historical information about the past events that have happened over the past few years to see the different speakers that we've had come in the different sessions that we've offered. So I encourage you to visit the website to find a little bit more about each of these sessions. Over the past few years.
I'm not going to turn it over to Chris and he's going to talk about the job and internship placements.
Thank you Katie. So one thing I do want to address that I did see quite a few questions on. Somebody was asking a question. Is this required? Is it compulsory? Do we have to do this? I think it's very important to think about the fact that this should not be viewed as an extension of the academic programs that you're studying. This should be considered an addendum of that.

Meaning, in support of everything that you're learning in the classroom, this program itself is designed. It's optional. You can opt in about 1/3 of our graduate students. Opt into this program. This program itself is in high demand with companies I have a few examples here that were recently posted with Google, Qualcomm and IBM looking for these type of soft skills, but it's very easy for you to look at any major company globally in the world, and they're looking to hire people, not only those that have.

Um, so the soft skills getting back to this these companies are looking for this. You should view these as a critical piece for you to leave as a graduate student at the University at Buffalo with they should not be viewed as something or do I have to do it as it's something this will make you more well rounded and it will also allow you better access employment opportunities in support of your efforts.
Next slide are graduates in the University at Buffalo School of engineering and Applied Sciences are found around the world. There are employed in various companies in industry and academia. This is just a small example of where our alums are hired around the world.
The top five hiring companies of our graduates an again, the list is extremely expensive. I believe last year we had about 360 four companies that participated in ROPT program. The top five hiring of our graduates are Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, Qualcomm and global it. Those are by the numbers.

Beyond the classroom. To make you more marketable given the fact that this certificate is something that you can put on your resume and the ability for you to work on your specific, strengthening your strengths and enhancing and strengthening your weaknesses will be turned around into a positive to make you more marketable. So not just thinking about all I get my degree and then what's available for me, making yourself more remarkable. It's about mark ability. Another question that came up regarding internships and opportunities and oh PT and beyond with job placements. One advantage that you have at the University at Buffalo in. In this presentation we did not have a chance to cover it, but in our acceptance student webinars. We did cover this. the University at Buffalo is one of the top international enrollment universities in the United States. Why is that important in the school of engineering and Applied Sciences?
Sagar Jitendra Thacker
09:34:44 AM
2. Can we do more than 25 hours or Is the whole program for maximum 25 hours?
About 75% of our graduate students in the school of engineering and Applied Sciences that are international. 60% of our Masters students are coming from India as well and many are coming from China, Iran, Bangladesh all around the world. Why is this important? It's important because students who have been before you have been able to secure CPT inope placement with our close relationship with the international students scholars office which will be hosting a web and are in a few weeks in April, they'll be inferred there's information already posted on our website.

So that's one piece I wanted to address with regards to opportunities and that how this program can help.

I'm another question is well these count towards my degree program know these do not count towards your required coursework for your programs. It's a completely separate program, it's non credit bearing. Um. Also how many students participate in the program. On is the program held on campus or online? Because this is a program that is developed to really help you focus on your soft skills. Those face to face interpersonal skills. Majority of the program does need to be completed on campus, so out of the 25 hours we require 20. Two of those hours to be completed in person on ground at one of our.

So the length of the Sasha question has come up regarding the length of the sessions. Most sessions are an hour to an hour and a half in length. Sometimes we do have two hour sessions as well. We find that having the sessions be an hour hour and a half in length, we allows us to be more modular in our sessions. And what do I mean by modular? Having the ability to do part one, part two or three as opposed to throwing a lot of information. Also in terms of helping out students with the flexibility of their schedules, you may have a class.

But you only have an hour in between. You have the ability to do that and also offering over 40 sessions a semester is very helpful to students to be able to pick and choose what they would like to focus on. It's very easy for students to think well, I'll just go to the sessions that I think that I'm good at something on there. We view this program. The more you're going to get out of this program is not only to think about strengthening what you're good at, but also working on your weaknesses and identifying those weaknesses to turn into a strength. And that's a very important aspect of the job.
Uh, search, and that's something that we talk more about with regards to that.
