True, but I'm not a ******* there.
Morning, how are you doing?
Good, good. Are you holding up OK?
Yeah, same same thing every day, right?
Same as last time I asked you.
Everything OK for you for today.
Um, yet the slides are up. The slides are up for the 4:00 PM session as well. Uhm, I took down the old ones and they submitted some new ones to me. I think they're ready to go. Yeah, so I think that were good today. As long as Jeff and Christina are good and I might send a message today. Lean just.
OK, yeah, I checked her permission. She's good to go up so we should be good.
And I saw that you got into some of the other events and fix my permissions on those. So I have the.
Yeah, you should have a mall now.
OK, thank you, thank you.
Why I look like I'm in a closet right now so I won't be on this one?
And I'm I'm gonna block out my my audio and video for this one.
Alright, Well you have almost put 300 registered almost.
Yeah, I was looking good.
So no, I thought they were going to try to do it at homecoming. Or is that kind of like there won't be a homecoming, so.
Alright, well I'll let you guys go. I don't need to to be here for this one, but I'll watch it and make sure if you need anything. Shannon just text me.
OK, thanks so much Jen, we appreciate it.
OK, take care of hey Jenn, will you check back and do the same thing for Kevin Burke later?
So what time can I guests log on?
They can I think they can law got in right at 10 and then what we've seen in the past is for the first couple of minutes it just sort of blows up the chat with the total number of guests and so for the first couple you waited a couple of minutes and then started talking maybe 90 seconds or something.
I would say whether they can read the slides is going to depend on factors that we can't control, like look screen they're using in someone, but will send out the. You know, we've converted this to a PDF and compressed it so we can send it out afterwards without any issues.
Right, so as far as I can tell, like you have to use your cursor to go to the next one like the errors, at least for me, don't don't do any.
You have to toggle on the control slides button.
Yeah, as far as I know that it's not, uhm?
Like a focused control. In other words, like we can both claim to control the slides at the same time some.
Yeah, but I mean the point is like if you go in and grab like if you say I want to be able to control the slides before I'm done. It shouldn't impede my ability to control the slides.
Give her stating the obvious.
My like having um, the chaos of children surrounding me in everything not having been alone for this is we're starting week. Four of that. Is that my? I have a lag so I get a request. So let's say Kevin Burke, you know I'm like, do you have the updated slides? OK, I get the slides uploaded for him and so on, but I don't tell him that.
Until the next day. That that's done, like my leg is like get it done, get it done. Oh wait, somebody's hungry. OK, I didn't tell him.
By the way, my children could start making noise at anytime, so, uh.
Well, I am I message today been using the Webex teams group that were in um an I haven't.
Seen a response. I'll do my best to moderate and then um, I'll export it afterwards. If she's not here and I'll send her the chat to to fill in the blanks. Does that sound good?
Yeah it will be doing the job you're you're a backup.
Got it, got it. I'm also on a porch because it's quieter out here.
Just gonna be awkward for those 90 seconds. I'll wait for people to.
We could bring our video.
The admissions marketing team. The marketing team is working on getting our webinars on their website. I checked back again this morning and they're not up there yet, but.
It'll be nice when they fill out their website a little bit.
Oh, I didn't. I didn't know Danny.

Collectively, those departments over offer a 15 degree programs at the undergraduate level, we now have 10 programs focused on engineering. Those include aerospace, biomedical, chemical, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial and mechanical engineering, and all of those programs that I just mentioned are accredited by a bit. Our most recent engineering program is material science and engineering. We just obtained approval to be able to launch that program in the fall of 2020 and will be pursuing a bat and accreditation in the years to come for that program. One of the things to note about a bad accreditation is that you need you do need graduates from the program in order to see if that so that will be a couple years before were able to do that.
We also have a number of programs in the Applied Sciences area are most popular by far is our computer science program and this is a program that is also accredited by abet.

Let me just share a little bit of information with you about our numbers so this current academic year we have just over 4200 students at the undergraduate level and in the last academic year we conford well over 1000 bachelors level degrees and so together with the breath of the degree programs that we offer, it makes the UB School of engineering and Applied Science is the largest and the most comprehensive school of engineering and Applied Sciences.

In the state of New York, this is something that we're proud of in the sense that this size and the scope allows us to provide tremendous opportunities to. Students were also cognizant and appreciative of this sort of factors and complexities that come along with being a large school and as a result of that we put in place a number of different programs to help students personalize their educational experience and sort of to make a large school feel small.

I mentioned just a minute ago, the degree programs that we offer at the undergraduate level. There are also a number of different ways for students to sort of layer on or add in to their degree options. Help them to differentiate what they're doing relative to their peers, and so some of those options are listed here. We have a really nice five year combined degree program in which students earn a bachelors level degree in either engineering or computer science and combine that with a Masters of Business Administration.
Shannon Phillips
10:10:05 AM
We will send the slides to you after the event, and we will make the webinar available via SEAS YouTube
A number of our students end up double majoring a very common option is the double major in mechanical and aerospace engineering, and a good number of our students also pursue minor programs and and this is really where we see the diverse interests of our students. We have a number of students that go on and they they pursue minor options that are more, maybe liberal arts focused pursuing something and music or art history, maybe economics. Other of our students stick with something more technical and maybe pursue a minor and in math or chemistry or physics.
Viswesh Seshan
10:10:38 AM
Good day
And some other students pursue minor options that we have available within the school of engineering and applied Sciences. So for some time we've had a minor in computer science, and more recently we've offered a number of interesting minors in things like robotics and manufacturing and human factors.
A good number of our students also go on to Graduate School in order to differentiate their education, and that's something that I'll pick up on a little bit later.
Alright, maybe one of the most common questions. If you get from students at Hey, you know what kind of courses I'm going to be taking? What does the group degree program look like?
And of course the details there are very from one program to another, but but there are certainly common elements across all the different programs within the school of engineering and Applied Sciences that are worth mentioning.

Hello Hi everybody so it's just said my name is Christine Human an I am the associate Dean for student affairs. I did my BS in civil engineering from the University of Manchester and I came to the US to do my masters and PhD which I got from the University of California at Berkeley.

Many of our undergrad students doing research are, um, contributing to Peer Review Journal Papers. Other students are competitive. Four prestigious national scholarship, so the picture there is of Anna. Anna Rism was a chemical engineer, but she was actually doing some research crossing between chemical and electrical and based upon her research, she wanna Goldwater Scholarship. And then she went on to Graduate School at Carnegie Mellon.

to change majors within SEAS it's as easy as filling out an online form. as long as you meet the minimal requirements it is done.
Faculty often have funding to help undergraduates doing research, but also we have you be wide office called experiential learning network and they also offer support funding to help students not only do research, but also attend conferences.

So the experiential learning program within the school mismanaged or it was envisioned by its director, professor Andrew Clinic, who's also faculty in our new Department of Engineering Education. So it's built on the premise that students can start engineering from day one. So yeah, think about experiential learning as developing skills and also being able to apply what you're learning in the classroom.

Two different projects and internships, so tinkering is really a series of self directed modules. So as a freshman you can come in. Let's say you've never sought it before, so we have a great electronics tinkering lab. You can go into the lab staffed by graduate students, have a lot of different modules where you can go in, learn disorder and put together simple circuits. We have a great 3D printing lab, so if you want to learn to 3D print, you can.
Guancheng Lu
10:29:27 AM
can y'all hear any thing?
Teach yourself CAD software. There is instructions and different activities you can complete and you can take part in a 3D printing Workshop. Maybe you want to learn to be more proficient in the machine shop you want to learn to Weld, or to use a different machines so you can certify to go into the machine shop. We have a class or one credit class where you can learn some of the different skills that you need to be competent in the machine shop and we also have certain activities that are student clubs do to sort of expose students to.

Inter murals are project based, so think about going from learning simple skills to starting to apply concepts you're learning in class. So I'm intermural is a project it can come from industry, so our engineering partners might come up with a.
The project it can come from faculty. It can come from students themselves and so you work in teams.
Dalene Aylward
10:30:15 AM
to complete a double major you have to meet the requirements for both to graduate. mechanical and aerospace is very popular bc they're so similar and it only requires an additional 4 classes. for adding a different double major, it would be more classes. you can really combine anything you want, it just adds more classes.
Del Hart
10:30:19 AM

And sometimes there's several teams working on the same project, so it's almost like a little competition. Examples could be, um, intramural, where students created an app for M&T, so they could collect student information during career fairs.
There was another into another example would be for civil engineering students where they actually worked with our day care center on campus and they designed a floating classroom in the Lake on campus.

this shows the courses each semester for a student interested in combined comp sci BS & MBA; https://catalog.buffalo.edu/academicprograms/compscibusadmin_comb_bs_curricular_plan.html
Uhm, I think another example would be a group of students that worked with NASA Goddard um to develop a control system for a cubesat which is a little miniature satellite. So lots of different types of projects. Some of them are more disciplined, specific, some of them across disciplines. What's really wonderful about working on the Inter murals? You just start developing those kind of teamwork, time management skills that you need to be successful at industry and summer students that have participated in the Inter murals have then gone on to get internships.
Emilio Baez

Hi, do UB Honors credits count as gen ed credits?
With those companies that they worked with during the Inter mural projects. So with those skills that you develop during intramurals, you can then, as I said, apply those skills and internships. Senior year is Jeff mentioned, we programs have a capstone design sequence, so a lot of the skills and project management skills that you've learned you can apply them into your capstone design sequence.

How would the honors college differ from the general college?
So in terms of clubs you be or the school of engineering, you be has hundreds of clubs. The School of engineering has over 30 clubs and organizations, so there are clubs for every discipline and also. So let's say if you're a chemical engineer, there's a student club for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. If you're a mechanical engineer, there's a student club for the American Society of mechanical engineer. So every discipline as their own student club. But there's also many clubs.
Across disciplines, so we have Society of women engineers we have.

Many of these clubs participate in competitions, so the picture here is the SCE Steel Bridge team and they are very successful nationally, and last year they placed fourth in the national competition. So about 250 student clubs from universities around the country participate in this competition and said they were fourth in the national competition. So we start off regionally, and if you're successful at the regional level.
Then you get to go on to Nationals.
Dalene Aylward

how to apply fo ra double major? it depends upon which majors you're trying to apply for. within SEAS you just fill out a simple form on our site once you're a student. it's accepted as long as you meet the minimal requirements.
Uh, this year are Robotics Club qualified for the World Championships we have clubs are SOC for the exploration and development of space. They design and launch rockets up to 10,000 feet and they participate in competition, spaceport America in New Mexico. Our Society of Automotive engineers designer clean snowmobile and a Baja vehicle. So there's endless opportunities to get involved.

Students are also attending regional and national conferences, and one thing that our engineering partners do is they provide funding for the school and so that helps us send more of our students to competition and more of our students to regional and national conferences. we won't get too much into honors college today, but I do recommend you contact the Honors College with your interest. every student is considered for the Honors College upon application to the university. it is not something that our school decides.
I guess the best introductions would be for students to sign up for early move in, so moving can be a little crazy. Everybody is arriving on campus at the same time. If you join women in science and engineering, you can actually move in a couple of days early and then get settled and then while everybody else is trying to fight the crowds, you're actually doing programming. You're getting to know each other, your meeting faculty, you're having lunch, and you're generally relaxing and enjoying campus. So that's one of maybe something that.

So it you be we have opportunities to do short term projects. Sorry short term programs like this winter session in Costa Rica. That's two weeks long or we have summer program. So one of the summer programs would be for engineering students between their freshman and sophomore year where they spend 5 six weeks in France learning statics and also learning about history of the European Union.
And they do that with a faculty member, so most of these short-term project programs are faculty land. We also have our stem communication class that Jeff talked about writing in the disciplines that was offered last summer in Wales.

So In addition to faculty LED programs within the school and also just you be wide faculty LED programs, we have partnerships with many different universities around the world, so many opportunities. If you want to be more adventurous and sent, spend a semester or even a year abroad, there are opportunities to do that. So one thing we would always suggest to anybody that's interested in study abroad is just think about it and plan ahead early so that you can organize your curriculum to make sure that you.

So just in terms of outreach, many of the student clubs have their own outreach connections, but at the school we have a longstanding partnership with Westminster Community Charter School, so every month students from you be undergraduates and graduate students go to their school and they deliver hands-on experiments and work with the students. And then a couple of times a year, the students come on campus to UV and spend the whole day having learning different activities. So it's really fun way.

I know many of you are interested in scholarships, so um, at the admissions level, you be has a variety of different merit scholarships. Presidential Provost, pride of New York. Uhm, we also have the women's empowerment scholarship, but once you're accepted into the school, we do have a variety of different donors scholarships, so we're always sending out emails. OK, these scholarships open apply now and everything is administered through the you be wide scholarship portal.
Many of our students, In addition apply for professional society scholarships. Anna very competitive and successful.
For those of you from New York State, Obviously there are two statewide scholarships, the stem initiative and the Excelsior.
Khushi Rawat
10:41:19 AM
amidst covid-19 do we get an extension to defer our admission decision till 2021?
One thing I just wanted to say, and this is my personal preference, but if you are eligible to vote for both, stem an Excelsior, just make sure you look into both and understand the difference. In my perspective, I really like stem.
Because it allows you to stack scholarships. On top of that and what I mean by that is if you have the stem scholarship and then you um, awarded another scholarship, you can keep them both. The difference is Excelsior is if you have an Excelsior and then you are awarded an additional scholarship that just reduces the amount of money you get through Excelsior. So stand you can stack on top of Excelsior. UConn. So I'm just saying if you're eligible to both, please look into them, understand the differences before you select one.
I'm so does the slide about Buffalo and I might get Jeff to chime in here. Obviously Buffalo is not my home city, I'm English, but I and I've been here 718 years. But I absolutely love living in Buffalo.
People joked when I came here, you know, yes, you 'cause I've moved around a lot. You'll be there two years and then we'll see where you're going next. and I think this is my home for life. I've actually lived here now longer than I've lived anywhere else.
Really does have New York State low cost of living. I love The Four Seasons so we have a really gorgeous long fall. The winter allows you to do winter sports. There's lots of skating and skiing and then we have a phenomenal summer. So the picture you see there is of the downtown waterfront. There's a lot of Culture, great museums of obviously were a huge sports town, so I like everybody else in the fall on a Sunday I'm watching the Bills, and even though the Sabres have been terrible for the last few years, I still support them and I still go to games.

I saw 1 one thing, um. We probably won't get all the questions now, but we will be reaching out to you later. So if you don't get your question answered during the web and our don't worry, we will get back to you with information as soon as we can. I saw a question about living and learning communities. what are the prospects for the fall semester with regards to it being online?
Community is mostly the freshman level, but there's a couple of sophomore. There's something called Leadership House. There's also an engineering interest floor, so engineers can live together on the same floor, and that's a really great way to kind of build your cohort and your friend Group an and have an opportunity to kind of build study group. So that's an opportunity.

10:48:54 AM
just one quick question - is the honors college linked to the discipline you pursue or is it general?
You know there's a lot of questions about majors, double majors adding minors when I can do a combined degree and lots of lots of questions like that. I've been trying to add links to the catalogs that students can find those easily. So for any students they have questions that don't like very specific questions that don't get answered. You can definitely use Google or DuckDuckGo Ann. Just put in you be 2020 undergraduate catalog and you can find all your answers there. Mainly the themes are. Can I change my major? Can I add a double major?
Frank Leitch
10:49:18 AM
If the COVID-19 crisis continues (on going crisis or wave 2), will UB be offering a Distant Learning option in the fall? Would it cover all the fall required classes?
The answer is yes as long as you meet the minimum requirements. We can do that with in engineering if you're adding another engineering or computer science major or changing from one to another really really easy to do it. Just a simple form on our website. I'm actually the person in the office who does it, and I check it everyday. Depending on how close you are to meeting those requirements, it could take a couple days, maybe a week or two, but normally it's done within 24 hours very, very fast.
And simple to do if you wanted to add a major outside of the school of engineering and Applied Sciences, you want to work with another Department. Then let's say you were adding history or biology or who knows anything else you want to talk to the Department to be able to meet those requirements with those prequisite classes.
Tony Mercurio
10:49:51 AM
can you please go over how you will be dealing with covid-19 in the fall?
And then applying at their appropriate time. So that's going to vary depending on what you're looking for. the University has well over 60 minors, so there's so much that you can do so much that you can add if you want to within the school of engineering, adding a minor is similar to adding a double major or changing a major really simple on our change. Major minor form aside of Engineering, same thing you want to meet with that other office and discuss with them when you can end their minor. Depending on what their requirements are, all of them are listed in the undergraduate catalog, so again, you can search and you can find it there.
I did see a lot of questions about on specific course topics. You can also use undergraduate catalog to do a course topic search or of course title search. So if you're looking specifically for classes I saw on an AI.
You can do. You can do that topic search there and you can find those right there in the catalog and you can see how many we have and read those course descriptions and it'll show you what the prerequisites are. So you're going to see you're not going to take those freshman year. This is going to be a little bit farther along once you're there 'cause it's done, but the undergraduate catalog is a fantastic resource, so definitely use that. I did see a lot of questions also about transfer credits and AP credits, so I did I did share the link for those.
Again, you can do it. DuckDuckGo or Google search to find those links. If you didn't see them in the chat, but essentially you be accepts all credits, the question really is what's it equivalent to? What's it going to account for?

A philosophy class of some kind and we don't have an exact match for that. Well, that's OK, but philosophy is a humanities, so we can count that for your humanities general education requirements. So that's really great. If it counts for a very specific class, then we can use that for that requirement. So it's just a matter of what it's equal to and how we can use that. Same thing goes for AP credit will use it. Your advisor, when you first get accepted, and we're making your schedule, will look at all of your credit that you're bringing in. Make sure you let us know what those are. Will look at all of your credit.
And will apply as many as we possibly can, so those are things that I'm seeing a lot.

since you need 120 at least to graduate, divided by 8 semesters is 15/semester. but you can use summer 7 winter courses if you feel like you want to catch up
Yeah I would just I had so civil. It's a little. It's kind of the same, but we integrate our labs into classes so we have three classes. One of the sophomore level, one at the junior level and then sorry two at the junior level where we integrate the labs within the class. So you're learning the theory and then doing the experiments at the same time. So that's how we handle it within civil engineering. But I think it's important to know the distinction between say, a program like Buffalo. There is a lot of emphasis on theory and concepts, but then applying those theory and concepts. It's not a technology pro.
When were you just doing hands-on so that it's really important that we have that balance between learning the theory, really understanding the concepts, and then having opportunities to put that into practice?
Shannon Phillips
11:01:15 AM
Delbert - great. Participate in that session. It's important!
I'm seeing a lot of questions about the capstone, a man I'm not quite sure if students are asking about the.
Uhm, you BC 399 General Education Capstone. Or if it's the capstones for the majors, but might you be able to speak to that if they're referring to the ones of the majors?
Yeah, I think they're just very different. I mean, all of them are an opportunity to take everything the whole.
Dalene Aylward
11:01:38 AM
new students begin registration for fall in June
The concept of a capstone is to take everything you've learned and have an opportunity to apply it to our project. But how that happens is a little different depending on the program. So in industrial engineering they actually do an internship at the same time when they work with companies and then they all have a project and that becomes their capstone project. In civil engineering we have one very large capstone project with different components for structural engineer or a transportation engineer and they work with.
Dalene Aylward
11:02:26 AM
questions about visa status should be asked of the ISS office at 716-645-2258
Local practicing engineers who are giving them support along the way, and so that's how they handle it in civil. So one very large project with different components mechanical. They all have very separate projects. Many of them come from industry and so they're working to design to improve the prototype. Because that's a very different kind of design experience, so I don't know. Maybe Jeff can talk about chemical and some of the other capstone.

is there any other way to send medical records to register the classes since we dont have fax machines at our homes and entire country is in lockdown
So I'll give you an example of one of the computer engineering project. So because I do commencement, a group of computer engineering students came to me and said they wanted to develop something that could read the names of all the students. Because it's always an issue at commencement, making sure the names are read correctly and so to come up with a system where you had a bar code that you could scan and the names will pre recorded and then it would all be announced and everything would be perfect so.

of course, if you are an international student, you will be limited on where you can work so you should talk to ISS about it: 716-645-2258
They did that and we used it a commencement and it was really fun to work very well. So uhm, you know some of the projects as they come from industry. Some of them come from students themselves. They just have this great idea and they want to pursue it and we try and find a way to make that happen. Some students take what they did in an intermural so the intermural with the cube sat with NASA. Are they actually then went on and continued after working with NASA to improve and then that became their capstone project?

Their numbers when he felt the FAFSA. So if you have not yet, make sure you felt the Fasa for financial aid. You'll then get a report telling you how much aid you receive, whether it spell which is a federal, whether it's tab, which is New York State Excelsior, which is also New York State. There's a stem scholarship, so there's a couple different things. But whatever you qualify for, you want to make sure you're talking to a financial aid advisor. The number of their office I did put in the chat, but the number of their office is 716.

6458232 so then I'm seeing questions about like how long do I have to pay off my loans? I mean, that's going to vary depending on which longer taking, subsidized, not subsidized from a bank. what I mean there's so many different things so it's hard to answer those very detailed specific questions without having access to that information. So again, the number is 6458232 and they'd be able to give you more details about all those financial aid policies in what you qualify for.
And then I would just add for international students admission. Scholarships are administered through the office of international missions, so you would work with them directly.

What is the process of booking dorms?
Also, I'm seeing questions about living in the residence halls.
You never forced to live in the residence halls. I'm seeing that I was you be student for undergrad in for grad school I never lived in the residence halls. I live 10 minutes from campus, were a big commuter school. So we've got a lot of students living on campus and a lot of computers as well.
So it's never requirement to live on campus. You could stay on campus for all four years if you want, and you could never live on campus. It's completely up to you. It really depends on where you choose to live. If you wanted to live in an apartment or with family friends off campus stuff, that's fine too.

I would say that it's, uh, it couldn't. It's often being seen as an advantage to live on campus, at least in the first year, just so that you is often, I think, easier to adjust. You develop a peer group quicker. You develop.
Groups that you can work with when you're working on your homework, so study groups, and so sometimes if you can and not everybody can. But if you can live on campus for the first year, I think that's often an advantage.

And if you can't I simply couldn't and again. I only live 10 minutes away if you can't definitely join a student club talk to students before and after classes. That's when I started working on campus was my second semester. Freshman year and absolutely loved working on campus and made a lot of friends made a lot of connections with faculty and staff and so we still if you don't have that camaraderie or that community from living in the residence halls. You can definitely still get that it's not that you have to be on the outside or anything. Computers can definitely find that community, too, despite just by joining clubs and organizations and.
Yeah, I think it's really been a big push. A lot of our student clubs to make that clubs very welcoming to freshmen and neutrons, mutants and develop programs to make sure that everybody can maintain engaged and develop that peer group.
