On the presidential scholarship, as well as the Prosperity Fellowship Review Committees each year, and it's a joy to work with you. Be students and look forward to seeing all of you here at you. Before long that explore Buffalo is Laura mentioned we are a nonprofit organization. We promote Buffalo with architecture, its history, and we do this through tours, primarily. Other education programs that are led by about 250 volunteers. Then you can see there some of the volunteers who graduated from a recent volunteer.
Training class and over the past couple years interest in Buffalo, its history, its architecture is really ground tremendously. So you see there are attendance has grown likewise from 2014, just over 6000 people to last year more than 25,000 people took a tour with explore Buffalo. So we're really excited about all of the positive.

Press the Buffalo has received and looking forward to what that will bring in the years ahead, so I'm going to go through an introduction to Buffalo show you around Buffalo essentially and look forward to hearing any questions that you may have as well. So a question that a lot of people often ask to start with is how did Buffalo get its name, and the truth is it did not get its name from this beautiful shaggy creature here overall.
Nishanth Mudkey
10:03:51 AM
It's a really pretty creature
The screen that picture actually took last fall. I was out in South Dakota and one of them walked right up to my car. So Buffalo, there's a couple theories of how Buffalo got its name, but nobody is exactly sure. It's not written down anywhere. Most likely it came from the Native Americans who are in Western New York in the Buffalo region for centuries before the European explorers came through the region in the early 1700s. So again, not really sure, but it's not based on this beautiful creature, but we do have some of these.

Are they any production units or factories where chemical engineering graduates can work in Buffalo?
Buffalo, uh, as I mentioned, the European explorers arrived starting the 1700s, but it wasn't until the 1800s and Buffalo started to grow. And that was because of the Erie Canal. If you see in this picture here you see off in the distance that big body of water that's Lake Erie, one of the five Great Lakes and Buffaloes at the eastern end of Lake Erie and just passed that eastern end of Lake Erie on the Niagara River is Niagara Falls and ships can travel. Of course, over Niagara Falls, so all the ships.

Coming on the Great Lakes had to end in Buffalo, and when the ships would arrive in Buffalo originally, there was no way for them to travel to Saint York City. But with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, Buffalo became this gateway between the Atlantic coast and the Great Lakes, and people and goods started to travel between both parts of the country. And so you see in this picture there's a building in downtown Buffalo with two statues of Liberty on top of it. One faces West One.

Thank you lauren :)
Race is Easton that symbolizes Buffalo's role as the gateway between the American West and the East Coast, and we'll see some more of that as we work our way through this show. So just a little bit on geography. As I mentioned, I do have a geography degree, so just take a quick look at where Buffalo is situated compared to other major cities around the Northeast so you see the UB logo right. There is where course you campuses at the eastern end of Lake Erie. One of those.
5 Great Lakes. So if you look following along the shores of Lake Erie there heading West from Buffalo headed to the left, you'll see Cleveland and then the far end. Is Detroit just North of Buffalo across Lake Ontario is Toronto. So that's very close to Buffalo as well. And then if you look at the lower right portion of the map, you'll see New York City is down at the other end of New York State, so it's about a 7 hour drive by car from Buffalo to New York.
And then close to New York. Is Philadelphia as well, and then further at the far right of the map you see Boston. If you take the highway, the Route 90 from Buffalo Head East, you'll get to Boston, and that's about an 8 hour trip by car. If you take 90 the other direction, you'll get to Cleveland, then Chicago, and if you took it all the way to its western end, you would actually end up in Washington in Seattle.

Looking a little bit closer here at Buffalo, you see downtown Buffalo is right there by the blue section at the bottom left. That's where the Lake is. That's where Buffalo, the heart of the city is Ubys North Campus, where the engineering school is located is just outside of the city up in sort of the northeastern suburbs of Buffalo. And if you look at the far upper left of the map, you'll see Niagara Falls is located.
Lauren Rothschild

Buffalo has a rich economy - you can view some of our largest employers here: https://buffaloniagara.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Major-Employer_OneSheet-01_29_20.pdf
In the upper left, also Niagara Falls is about 20 to 25 minutes by car from the you be North Campus. Something that's really great about Buffalo in particular is that everything is very convenient. So from UBS North campus, just about everything that I'm going to show you today is within about 20 to 25 minutes by car. So either you have your own car or take an Uber or Lyft. You can get through all these places very conveniently from North campus.

So I'm going to start with some of the outdoor activities around Buffalo Show you some of the beautiful places to check out and explore outdoors, and then we'll keep moving along from there. So a favorite place in Buffalo is along Buffaloes waterfront. As I mentioned, this is where Buffalo really was born when the Erie Canal opened in.

Shreyas- the campus has shuttles between all campuses
The 1800s, so you see the lighthouse there. That's from 1833, marking the entrance to Buffaloes Harbor. So there's a lot of opportunities, particularly in the summer, too. Of course, enjoy that beautiful waterfront boat rides things like that and enjoy going out, including out onto Lake Erie. So this is a view of downtown Buffalo from Lake Erie sailboat. Things like that as well.
Harivignesh Gomathi Sankara Guru
10:08:55 AM
Does buffalo have domestic transportation system like metro rail network connecting downtown with places like UB, Niagara Falls etc.?
Right there at the harbor is an area called Canalside, and this is actually the original spot where the area canal opened in 1825, and it's a development area for the city right now. This is the original end of the Erie Canal when the Airy Canal opened in 1825. This was the spots for that happened, and so there's a lot of development happening there right now.

how long is buffalo from new york>
Jennifer Gammell
10:09:12 AM
Buffalo offers public transportation such as buses and a subway system between south campus and downtown buffalo
One of the popular things to do at Canalside in the winter. Of course that is beautiful and has the water open in the summer time, but in the winter time much of that water surface is frozen and it's a great place to go and ice skate and enjoy the winter weather in downtown Buffalo waterfront. Also home to the Buffalo Naval Park, which has a couple of Navy ships docked there that you can take tour of as another landmark along the Buffalo Waterfront. You're into kayaking. The Buffalo Waterfront is a great place to enjoy as well.

Lauren Rothschild
10:10:02 AM
You can also travel via train or bus between the two cities.
This is something explore Buffalo offers during the summer months. Hiking along the Buffalo River. These massive buildings that you see towering along the River are Buffaloes grain elevators. When Buffalo became a major port after the opening of the Erie Canal, one of the major goods that traveled through Buffaloes Harbor was grain. So by the turn of the 20th century, around 1900, Buffalo became the largest grain port in the world, and these buildings here were built to store and move brain as it came into Buffalo's harbor.

Another thing that you might see while you're out and about kayaking on the Buffalo River is our fire boat. This is the fire. About the Carter. It doesn't really fight fires anymore. Back one Buffalo had a lot of those grain Mills and factories along the waterfront. It was more active fighting fires. Now it's more of a Phoenix, sort of tourists icon along the waterfront.

We do still have large ships coming into Buffalo and a couple of the grain factories are active here in the city, so if you see in this picture you'll see one of the large freighters and this is talked at the General Mills factory along Buffaloes waterfront. So a fun trivia fact we have in Buffalo is you may see when you get here, people wear shirts that say my city smells like Cheerios. That's because Cheerios are manufactured here in Buffalo, and when they're baking materials at this factory, you'll smell Cheerios that.

Moving along the waterfront, some other things to enjoy. The outer harbor fronts along Lake Erie has some great walking paths as well as some fun outdoor art and sculpture and is a perfect place to enjoy the sun sets Buffalo faces West along Lake Erie and what that means is we enjoy sunsets, overlake, Erie and almost every evening in the summer and even throughout the year. Although it's a little chilly in the winter, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over Lake Erie.

How is Buffalo connected with Hartford?
Going to little bit North now from downtown and this is along the shore of the Niagara River. The Lakeerein Neros informs the Niagara River, which will eventually arrive at Niagara Falls, and you have a wonderful hiking and biking trail right along the shore of the Niagara River. So great place to go and enjoy in this trail actually connects directly to UBS North Campus, so there's a trail that starts along Ellacott Creek in Amherst along North Campus and then will eventually lead to this Niagara River trails about 10 miles.

Little bit further along the Niagara River, of course, is Niagara Falls one of the major tourist destinations in North America, and this is right here in Buffalo in UBS backyard. So, as I mentioned before, it's about 20 to 25 minutes from North campus up to Niagara Falls, traveling by car, and it's a great place to go both in the summer months as well as in the winter months when there's a lot of ice, and there's also less tourists there in the winter months. Easier to get up close to the falls themselves.

Stampede Buses are available at all times. There are bus schedules posted online at all times for students to know when they can expect them.
Little bit further up from Niagara Falls, this is on the shore of Lake Ontario. You'll see old Fort Niagara. This is for those actually built by the French in the 1700s when they controlled Western New York. And when you're up adult four Niagara looking out across Lake Ontario. Actually looking up for its Torontos. Oh, a great view from Old Fort Niagara as well.
Also outside of the city or a couple of large parks I'll highlight a couple of them so one of my favourites is Chestnut Ridge park this is about 20 minutes or so South of Buffalo and as a park with a lot of great hiking trails has an eternal flame in it that you can find along one of the trails as a great place to go and spend an afternoon take a picnic something like that.

A little bit further past Chestnut Ridge during the winter months we have a big active ski community centered around Ellicottville, so if you're into those winter sports skiing, snowboarding, things like that, there are a lot of great opportunities to do that South of Buffalo. This is about an hour or so away from North campus by car.
Have a great place outside of Buffalo out in East Aurora is Knox Farm State Park and this again is a great place to go and enjoy the hiking trails throughout the park.

Within the city of Buffalo, there are a series of Parks that were designed by Olmsted. Frederick law Olmsted designed Central Park in New York City, is his most famous park. But then Buffaloes leaders wanted to have a park designed by him as well. And so he came to Buffalo and design not just one part, but a series of Parks throughout the city. These pictures here so Delaware Park, which is the largest of the Olmsted parks in Buffalo.

One of the features of Delaware Park is the Japanese Garden. This was a gift to Buffalo from her sister city in Japan. Kanazawa and they also included with that gift, many cherry trees in those cherry trees are actually just starting to bloom right now. Buffalo has not as many cherry trees as the famous collection in Washington DC, but we do have a beautiful Cherry Tree collection that is blooming right now and for about the next two weeks. These parks here, Delaware Park is about.

@Siddhant - many people choose to live, work, and study in Buffalo because it is one of the most affordable cities
One of the other Olmsted parks in Buffalo South Park is home to our botanical gardens. It's a great place to go anytime of year, but especially in the winter. It's always hot and humid inside of the botanical gardens. So great way to go and enjoy a tropical climate in Buffalo all year round. And one of the fabulous things that they do during the winter months is they have a light show they caught l'imagination which is the on the right when the gardens are lit up and it's a really popular.
Events runs for about a month in the winter, popular just for anyone to go enjoy and especially photographers.

Especially when compared to cities like New York, Boston, San Francisco, etc - the cost of living is very reasonable in Buffalo.
So moving on from the parks will move into some of the arts and culture here in Buffalo, so we'll start with some of our art gallery's the most famous of which is the Albright Knox, which you see here. The Albright Knox is particularly well known for his collection of modern art, so art from roughly the late 1800s to the present day, the Albright Knox is actually undergoing a major expansion right now, about 150 million dollars being spent to expand the museum.

Uh, so we're looking forward to the completion of that expansion in 2022. A couple of the pieces at the Albright Knox. They have most of the major names that you may know of from the 20th century, so artists like Picasso and Jackson Pollock and others. A piece on the left by Vincent van Gogh and then another one be right by Jackamoe Bala. These are two of my favourites. I have reproductions of both of these hanging in my house.
Right across the street from the operate Knox is another art Gallery, the Burchfield Penney, which focuses in particular on local artists and specifically Charles Burchfield, who did watercolor landscape such as the one you see there on the right.

You don't have to go to a museum to enjoy art in Buffalo you can find are all throughout the city over the past couple years Buffalo has embarked on a major public art campaign placing statues and murals all throughout the city a lot of this has been done by the Albright Knox you can see on the left one of the most popular is rather small but that's shark girl she's down at the waterfront I canalside and shark girl is a popular figure for people to go and take a selfie with and then take a photo with her.

Moving into some theaters throughout Buffalo, Buffalo has a tremendous collection of theaters. The best known is shezan downtown Buffalo. I can see the outside on the left and then very elegant interior shown on the right. Chaise is the largest theater in Buffalo and this is where all of the big productions come from. New York in particular. So, for example, Hamilton is coming back to Buffalo for a second time. This is where The Lion King and Phantom of the opera and this really big.

Favorite of mine is Shakespeare in Delaware Park Shakespeare in Delaware Park is a free production runs throughout the summer, just two shows each year. A comedy and tragedy starting in late June. Running into August and all you do is new. Come down to the Shakespeare Hill in Delaware Park and best thing to do is bring a picnic, bring a blanket or a chair and just sit back and enjoy the show. And it's just a wonderful experience in Buffalo during the summer to enjoy that free Shakespeare performance.

Is there a Pride march or festival in Buffalo?
But there's also a city with a lot of concert opportunities. On the left you can see a free concert in Bidwell Parkway, wanna Buffaloes neighborhoods in the Elmwood village in the summer months? There's a free concert in a different park or something like that. Almost every night of the week, so lots of opportunities to do free events. Free concerts in Buffalo, and we also have plenty of other concert fraternities for classical music, things like that. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performs at Klein hands music all that's on the right there.
And we also bring in a lot of the major touring productions, big names, Rolling Stones, and folks like that come and perform at the hockey arena or the football stadium throughout the year.

Is there other places of worship too in Buffalo ?
You want to find dinosaurs in Buffalo Buffalo Museum of Science is the place to go for you. They also host a lot of different touring exhibits. The Legos and body worlds, and things like that as well. I mentioned earlier the Buffalo Zoo being home to some of those buys, in which you can also. Of course, the Lions and Tigers and so forth. And they also have a tropical rainforest at the at the Buffalo Zoo, so another opportunity if you want to go someplace this tropical, you can go there in January, February and go into a lush.
Tropical landscape at the Buffalo Zoo and during the winter months they usually have admission deal. I think it's only $5 to get in. I see a question from Darlene about other places of worship in Buffalo. There are many other places of worship, every major denomination. All throughout Buffalo. Many of them were also convenient in Amherst. Around the you be North campus.

Another cultural destination in Buffalo is the Buffalo History Museum. This is located in Delaware Park. This is the only surviving building from when Buffalo hosted the world's Fair in 1901. That was called the Pan American Exposition. Buffalo at that time in 1901, was the 8th largest city in America and we were enjoying electricity coming from Niagara Falls and widespread electricity.

About Buffalo before it was widespread in most other American cities, so we put on a big display called the Pan American exposition. About 8 million people came to Buffalo to admire the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, so the centerpiece of that was building. You see shell near the Tower of Light, which had about 40,000 light bulbs. In those spotlights you see on the top dazzling display of electric power. Like most worlds fairs, most of those buildings were temporary. They were meant to be taken down.

are there roman catholic churches in ub campuses exclusively or would i have to journey to buffalo
At the end of the exposition, and the only one that was built to survive is again today. The Buffalo History Museum. The question there about Amherst in Buffalo, distance from Norma E. So the distance from Buffalo to Amherst from the North campus to downtown Buffalo is about 20 minutes or so. By car. You can also take the UV Stampede from North campus to South Campus and hop on the.

Hop on the Metro rail at South campus will take you right into downtown Buffalo, jumping over to edwins question, there is the Newman Center for Roman Catholic Church is right on UBS North Campus and then question about tracking places near Buffalo. There are a lot of different hiking opportunities throughout Buffalo and Western New York, so there's lots of guidebooks. Things like that that you can procure. There's a lot of large parks.
Outside of Buffalo, but still within an easy 20 minutes to half hour of views. Worth campus.

Buffalo is also home to a famous collection of architecture. This is really my specialty. Is the architecture throughout the city so we have works by all of the major American architects over the past hundred 150 years. So the building on the left is the guarantee building by Louis Sullivan from Chicago, considered to be one of the first true skyscrapers in the United States, the building on the right is now a hotel designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and this was designed.

Uh, initially to be a hospital, and again today is hotel and is this large Castle like building in Buffalo. A great place to go and enjoy. Buffaloes architecture is the top of our City Hall observation deck. It's free when the building is open, which is Monday through Friday during business hours and just go up there and enjoy this view from about 300 feet up of Buffalo City Hall itself is an Art Deco Landmark. If you think of other art deco buildings, most famous is the Empire State Building Chrysler building in New York City.
City Hall is very similar to those buildings in many ways.

Architects in America. Some of the most notable ones you see on the left is the hotel Lafayette. This was designed by the first professional woman architect in the country was from Buffalo. Her name was Louise Buffoon. She wanted to get architects in the 1800s, when women didn't do that sort of thing in America, and she persevered and she became the first woman to be a member of the American Institute of architecture, and she was from Buffalo hotel. Lafayette is one of her buildings. Edwin has question about best places to eat. Don't worry.
I'm getting there will get there before lunch. Definitely over on the right hand side is the old post office in downtown Buffalo and that is no longer post up. It's now another college campus, but a beautifully restored building.

Very popular neighborhood. Buffalo is the Elmwood Village. A lot of great streets with apartments and houses along them and then Elmwood Ave itself is the center of the Elmwood Village and they have a lot of great shops and restaurants, local boutiques, clothing stores, things like that throughout.

Um Allentown is very close to the UB medical school. This picture here on the left is Allen Street, which is the center of Allentown and you see at the far end of Elm Street is the new Hubie Medical School itself. So there is actually a Metro Rail. Train Station is inside the basement of the UB medical school. So if you come from health campus to that building, it's very easy to then walk right into Allentown. And there's a lot of great restaurants in Allentown itself. My favorite.

Grant Street is also a popular neighborhood in Buffalo, and this is where a lot of Buffaloes immigrants have settled in the grant St neighborhood in the past 10 to 20 years. And so there's a lot of different restaurants and different cultures represented. Buffalo has spent a major destination for immigrants, particularly from Burma from Nepal, from Somalia, and many of them have opened restaurants and businesses along Grand Street.

Another place to enjoy his neighborhood, called Larkin Square. Larkin Square is an area of old factories and warehouses by the Larkin Company which used to manufacture soap here in Buffalo. They no longer do that. They want to business. But all of those buildings have been repurposed into other offices. Partments things like that and at the center of it there are some restaurants and a great place to go. Hang out and enjoy the neighborhood.

Right here in Buffalo is also hertel Avenue and North Buffalo I'm especially partial to this neighborhood goes that's where I live the house that you see on the right side of screen is actually mine so that's where I'm showing you want this slide show from right now over on the left is North park theater this is the centerpiece of the hurdle Avenue shopping district so it's a great place to go and enjoy a movie and it's surrounded by restaurants and shops a great place to walk around.
And also it's another popular area. Lot of apartments available that allowed us to be grad students living in the neighborhood.

Very close to UBS North campus is the village of Williamsville is where I grew up and Williamsville is centered around Ellacott Creek and you can see there's a waterfall right there in the heart of the village. Williams though, so you don't have to go to Niagara Falls. You can go right so let yourself see a much smaller waterfall, but beautiful nonetheless. There's a lot of great little shops and restaurants in Williamsville, so the building on the right which is the old Williamsville Water Mill, is now an ice cream shop, sweet.
Suhas Vijayakumar
10:30:21 AM

So great place to go and enjoy it and ice cream column after taking out the waterfall.
Lancaster is another little village near Buffalo and you be North Campus. So great place to go. Some great little shops there. There's a wonderful little chocolate shop, a great clothing store. My favorite there is the New York store right in the heart of the village of line camp.
Easter ours a little bit further away. This is outside of that Knox Farm State Park, so about 1/2 hour or so from North Campus and East Aurora was built as an arts and crafts community around the Roycroft campus that used to be here so a lot of local Craftsman also has some really great shops there including place called Hitler's which is a five and dime store. You can find pretty much everything at it loads.

So of course we can't do this without starting with chicken wings. Buffalo's most famous culinary creation chicken wings are of course very popular, and as the story goes, were invented here in Buffalo at the anchor bar, which their sign over there is on the left hand side. There is of course some rivalry over who has the best chicken wings in Buffalo, whether it's the original, the classic anchor bar where they were created or one of the other major contenders is duffs.

Shown on the right. So when President Obama visited Buffalo a few years ago, he went to buff. So of course, there's all sorts of different contention, but really anywhere you go in Buffalo, you're going to get some pretty good wings. Chicken wings are typically kind of spicy, and you can order them mild, medium, hot, much hotter. Depending on where you go, they'll have various different levels of heat for those wings. Traditional accompany meant to.

Chicken wings in Buffalo is Buffalo Pizza, which is kind of its own unique style. So in New York City you may be feeling, or maybe have her New York City is thin crust pizza so very thin crust for New York City Chicago over to the other side of Buffalo has something that they call.
Mubin Ashfaq Tirsaiwala
10:32:36 AM
duff's is better
So I don't think it's really pizza, but it's deep dish pizza, so it's a very very thick pizza. And then Buffalo is right in the middle. It's got a really nice amount of dough, cheese sauce and then of course, traditional pepperoni, but you can put any kind of topping on that you like and there's Pizzerias in every neighborhood. All of them have their own little style little innovation that they do, but then really going to find a bad slice of pizza anywhere in Buffalo.

Buffalo second most famous uhm culinary creation is the beef on Weck Sandwich, most commonly found at Charlie the butcher. So this is a restaurant. It's actually right by the airport, but he has other locations. Charlie himself is there with the hard hat on on the right hand side and all will be fine like sandwiches. Is roast beef on a wack role, which is a role with salt and Caraway seeds. On top of it, and traditionally you put a little horseradish on it.

Some other popular late night fare in Buffalo UM thing that has about a half dozen or so locations is Jim stakeout. Breweries in Buffalo Buffalo. Over the past 10 or so years has developed a major craft brewing industry that we have about 20 or so craft breweries within the city of Buffalo, all producing various kinds of beers. Some of them are canned or bottled and sold throughout the region, and some of them are only available within that particular brewery.

Couple of other classics in Buffalo that are popular to go to and very affordable as well. Teds hotdogs, just a classic hotdog joint to go and enjoy. Hotdogs, onion rings, French fries, something like that. And actually on Sheridan Drive 1015 minutes away from North campus, right across the street is Anderson's ice cream, so great place to go and grab an ice cream cone after those hot dogs there. As I mentioned before, Buffalo also has.
Incredible array of cuisine from cultures all around the world. A lot of this comes from the immigrants have come to Buffalo over the past 20 to 30 years, so we have a large Burmese population here in Buffalo. Large Burmese community. So I'll start with the Buffalo Bisons, which are a baseball team here in Buffalo there, not a Major League Baseball team. They are a minor League Baseball team, so they are the farm team for the Toronto Blue Jays. And that means that the they get the players who aren't quite ready to play for the Toronto Blue Jays play for the Buffalo Bisons. What also means is because they're not a Major League team. The tickets are really cheap, so tickets I think Max out at 10. Maybe they're up to $12.00 a ticket for Bisons game, so it's a great place.

Buffalo's hockey team is the Buffalo Sabres. They haven't been very good for the past couple of years, but it's still fun to go and enjoy a hockey game downtown during the winter and then the Buffalo Bills are probably our best known sports team. The football team they play it has new era field which is just South of Buffalo and for a NFL team, National Football League team, their tickets are still pretty reasonable as.
Well, so those are the Major League sports teams here in Buffalo at the present time.
An now moving on to some of the big events are in Buffalo that take place throughout the year. One of the on going events that happens every Tuesday from May to roughly September and sometimes into October or something called food truck Tuesdays. Doors open, Buffalo news event that explore Buffalo produces this is an event where we open up buildings that people don't normally get a chance to see inside of, and they get to take a tour of that. So this picture shows the inside of the maintenance area for Buffaloes, Metro rail or subway system. Normally the public doesn't have a chance to go in here, but 4 door is open and 2019 that was open and people got to tour inside and see where the Metro Rail is maintained is stored and so forth.
Uh, of course we have home of the chicken wings. We have a wing fest in Buffalo, so this takes place at the baseball stadium in September. The race on the left is the Turkey trot, which takes place on the on Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving morning, and has about 15,000 people run in the Turkey trot. 8K or something like that. Um, starts in North Buffalo basically in my backyard and then heads into downtown Buffalo over on the right is team explore Buffalo for the fight for air climb that takes place every year. We take the steps and go to the top of the tallest building in downtown Buffalo to raise money for the Lung Association. Most of the major races and things like that are a fundraiser for some kind of medical or charitable cause in Buffalo. I see a question about haunted buildings. There are plenty of opportunities for.
Ghost tours and haunted tours, especially in the month of October, so some of them are in Buffalo and then there are also a few outside of Buffalo that are now. I'm not really into ghost tours and things like that. I'm easily spooked, but there are a lot of opportunities to do that.

So, uh, just to touch on some of the seasons in Buffalo? And how Buffalo really has all Four Seasons that we get to enjoy, and each of them has.

Um, in the summertime, Buffalo is a great place as I've shown before it to enjoy being out on the water. All of the different neighborhoods, the garden walks, and things like that. And autumn brings fall foliage and a lot of great opportunities to explore outdoors. It's one of my favorite seasons as well.
Alright, so the last section I wanted to touch on is nearby attractions to Buffaloes. The Buffalo is perfectly located to explore not just the city and its immediate surroundings, but places within a short distance of Buffalo. That's one of the things I really like about Buffalo is how easy it is to travel for an hour, 2 hours perhaps, and get to a great destination and make a simple day trip or a weekend trip. And there's lots of opportunities, so I'll go through a couple of those.
For you right now so right across the River from us is Canada so the bridge on the left is the peace bridge that connects Buffalo with Canada so I could leave from my house right now and be in Canada in about 15:20 minutes so from there once you cross that bridge it's about an hour and a half to get up to a torontos Oh the landmark CN Tower is there but also a lot of great cultural institutions a lot of great shopping and dining great neighborhoods Chinatown.

Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities to visit. Pittsburgh's little under 4 hours drive time from Buffalo. Heading South into Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has a great collection of museums, a lot of wonderful restaurants has the Andy Warhol Museum is a favorite of mine and is also home to falling water, which is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed house. Perhaps the most famous Frank Lloyd Wright designed house that's over on the right side. That's about an hour outside of Pittsburgh, so I was down there last fall so you can see. These pictures are from that.

10:46:42 AM
Jennifer can you please explain how to get that what that means?
About an hour or so, Dr. East of Buffalo is Letchworth Park. This is called the Grand Canyon of the East and this is where the Genesee River travels through this Canyon that it's created with a couple of beautiful waterfalls and it's a great place to come and enjoy traveling and hiking and just enjoying the scenic beauty and especially all Four Seasons. Winter, fall, spring and summer. It's a great place to enjoy nature.
A little bit further past.
Uh, Letchworth Park. A little bit further out. So about 2 1/2 hours or so from Buffalo in the Finger Lakes is Watkins Glen, which is another park with a lot of great trails. A lot of waterfalls and Watkins Glen is located at the end of Seneca Lake.

Dont we need Canadian visa?
Seneca Lake is one of the Finger Lakes which are a series of long narrow lakes and center of New York State which are very scenic beautiful lakes to enjoy. Both parks around them there also home to a lot of wineries, so it's a lot of fun to go and enjoy and sample some local wine and just enjoy that beautiful scenic part of New York State. My favorite finger Lake is Canandaigua. Like my family is fortunate to have a summer home on Canandaigua Lake, so in the summer time I'm I'm often there along Canandaigua Lake. This is the.

You come from our place on Canandaigua Lake so a great place to enjoy as well so like I said there's a lot of great places to enjoy traveling from Buffalo within an hour so In addition to everything that is very close to you be North campus here in the city of Buffalo so that wraps up all of the points that I wanted to mention so I'll just open it up for any questions that you might have now.
Brad, one question that we saw a few times was about the proximity of grocery stores and shopping plazas and specialty stores.
You be maybe specifically North campus? Uh, do you mind highlighting that again?

Is there a walmart or target near campus ?
Dewang Rajkakati
10:49:13 AM
Is there a Trader Joe's nearby?
Sure yes so um lot of great opportunities for grocery shopping things like that very close to North campus so the most famous and well-known grocery store in Buffalo and New York really is Wegmans Wegmans is very popular they've now spread as far as Boston and down into Virginia across the northeast and Wegmans has a couple locations very close to North campus there is a shuttle as far as I know that runs from North campus to Wegmans and they have.
Just an incredible assortment.

Walmart, Target and Trader Joe's are about 5 - 10 minutes from campus
Of everything everything you could possibly want it's kind of like if Disney World was the grocery store it would be waking up there are also a lot of specialty grocery stores different.
The graphic regions represented around North campus based on the large student population that is there and again those are all within a short distance of North campus.

what is the average cost of renting an apartment outside the campus?
Labeeb Zahed
10:50:03 AM
how much is the mean monthly personal expense one can expect?
Some of the larger chains like Wal Mart and target and Trader Joe's Ann. Those are all very close by North Campus, so it's really easy to get anything that you might need once you arrive to North campus as well as the sum of those specialty items that you might might be more familiar to home.

Can international students go to Canada from buffalo?
So some questions about housing Brad, where would you say? Or maybe some of the more popular neighborhoods where you be students like to live?
Pratyush Pothuneedi
10:50:48 AM
Do F1 visa holders need Canadian visa to visit Canada?
So some of the neighborhoods, uh, I've highlighted a few of them, so its course based on personal preference. There are plenty of neighborhoods in student housing opportunities very close to North campus. Within walking distance. Those are typically large developments with hundreds of units in them and a lot of students living all in that complex. So there are a lot of those places very close to North Campus. North campus is kind of a suburban location.

I am planning to buy a laptop on arrival in Buffalo just to reduce some carrying weight. Are there any electronic stores nearby??
And then there is also a lot opportunities closer to city in different city neighborhoods where you'd be renting an apartment. So like an upper or lower unit in a house, perhaps those opportunities tend to have more of a neighborhood around them where you can walk to classes, shops, and restaurants. Things like that. So a couple neighborhoods would be the University District which is surrounding South campus. There's a lot of apartments there on some great restaurants and shops along Main Street in the University district.

There's a lot of apartments right here in my neighborhood and North Buffalo that are relatively reasonable in price and have lots of access to the stores and restaurants and things like that on Hertel Ave and then place this or towards downtown towards the UB medical school around like the Allentown neighborhood. There's also plenty of apartments available there as well.

Can you please explain about medical insurance at UB?
Yeah, I think that a lot of people are asking about cost of housing and that can really vary. You can find a shared apartment or shared home and be paying as little as 300 or $400 a month, um, and then you know you can find some luxury apartments that might be closer to $1000 a month where you're living alone and you have all of the accommodations that you would need. So it really varies based on personal preference. Is Brad said we do have a large variety of?
Options both in the type of neighborhood and the type of housing that might be of interest to you and I put the link to our housing website at you be so they cover some of the on campus options and they'll also link you out to some of the off campus options as well.
Some questions about our climate, so the temperatures in the winter it can get cold. Brad, you want to talk more about that?
Pratyush Pothuneedi
10:52:49 AM
Please tell us the weather in winters and what kind of clothes are recommended

You know Fahrenheit it gets down. You know the coldest usually is teens. 20 something like that, which I think is just a little bit below 0 Celsius. But if you're prepared for it, it's really not that bad on those days where it is truly.
Sort of sub zero temperature.
Those days you know you're probably not going to be going outside and just going for you know stroll through Delaware Park or something. I mean you can, but you're probably not. You're probably going to put on a coat, put on gloves, a hat and boots an you know go from home to class to wherever and not spend a whole lot of times outdoors. Rest of the winter when it's in, say, the.

An you be also has a tunnel system, so a lot of the buildings on North campus or actually connected. So if you do find that it's a super cold day, uhm you can travel between most buildings throughout. I'll never having to leave outside, so that's kind of a nice perk on newbies North Campus.

Are there inter-city high-speed rail networks at Buffalo connecting major cities?
I see the question about food truck Tuesdays from Connor so so that takes place as of course we may expect on Tuesdays from May through October at Larkin Square, which is a neighborhood that is sort of redeveloped warehouses a little bit outside of downtown Buffalo, traveling from North Campus, it's probably about 2025 minutes to get there and takes place starting in May into October.

Ok thank you very much!
Um, high speed rail networks. We do not have high speed rail connecting estimated cities, but there is Amtrak that connects Buffalo East to New York City and Western Chicago.
And I think that might be something coming down the line. I know, um, there is development. I think of a high speed train between, I believe Toronto and Buffalo. And maybe connecting New York. So that is something that I think local leaders have been thinking about for a long time. And hopefully we can see that sometimes down, um.
